Davidson Farmers Market ends its weekly run for the season Oct. 31, but local food lovers fear not: Again this year, local produce and meats will be available through the fall and winter months, at fall/holiday markets in November and December and biweekly “tailgate” markets this winter.
The winter markets are aimed at meeting demand, from both farmers and consumers, market manager Mary Jane Leach told DavidsonNews.net. Some farmers who traditionally have taken the winter off now see an opportunity in year-round farming. “Our farmers who are growing for the winter need to sell, and we need to eat,” Ms. Leach said.
The market continues this Saturday, from 8 a.m. to noon, off Main Street next to Davidson Town Hall. Barrie Howard will provide musical accompaniment and the market will recognize its volunteers who help set up, take down and manage the weekly sales.
Next week, it’s Halloween. Organizers invite shoppers to wear their costumes and sample local apple cider. They’ll also have cooking demonstrations and live music.
HOLIDAY & WINTER MARKETS
Holiday markets are planned the first and third Saturdays of both November and December (Nov. 7 and 21, Dec. 5 and 19), from 9 a.m. to noon, at the market site next to Town Hall. (Note the time change from the regular season.)
Organizers suggest that shoppers place orders with their favorite farmers for specialty meat cuts, turkeys, and other items.
Meanwhile, after last year’s success, winter tailgate markets will return again this year, running every other week Jan. 9 to the end of April, 9 to 11 a.m. Farmers will continue to beef, pork, chicken; freshly baked breads, cakes, pies and cookies; cold-weather produce including lettuce and greens, sweet potatoes, root vegetables and winter squash; and soaps and other items.
