Davidson firefighters responded to two gas leaks over the past week that were caused by workers who cut gas lines. Elsewhere, three false alarms in one day brought firefighters to the Armour Street site that is being renovated as Community School of Davidson’s planned high school. Below: Our day-by-day weekly list of reportable calls, plus a tally of medical calls handled by the fire department.
FIRE/ACCIDENT CALLS, OCT. 6-13
TUESDAY, OCT. 6 – 11:51 p.m., 2-story Davidson College apartment building, 926 N. Main St. No fire.
WEDNESDAY, OCT. 7 - 7:17 p.m., 409 Ridge Road, Davidson College, smoke alarm activated in first floor laundry room. Source of the smoke was traced to a commercial washer.
THURSDAY, OCT. 8 - 9:48 a.m., 143 Spencer St., McConnell neighborhood, Smoke detector activated unintentionally, no fire.
FRIDAY, OCT. 9 – 6:58 a.m., auto accident, I-77 northbound at Iredell line. Davidson response canceled by Mount Mourne fire department, which was on the scene.
FRIDAY, OCT. 9 - 3:48 p.m., 112 S. Faulkner Way, St. Alban’s neighborhood. Firefighters responded to a gas leak, apparently triggered when a landscaper accidentally cut a 1/2-inch copper pipe. The leak was controlled by shutting off the line.
SATURDAY, OCT. 10 - 1:48 a.m., Davidson firefighters joined Cornelius fire department in responding to Meridian Street in Cornelius for a report of a building fire. There was no fire.
SATURDAY, OCT. 10 - 10:17 a.m., 626 Northwest Drive, Exit 30 area, firefighters responded to a call for a “citizen assist.” While they were en route, the call was canceled.
SATURDAY, OCT. 10 - Firefighters were called to the Liburdi factory, at 404 Armour St., on three occasions Saturday afternoon because of malfunctioning smoke alarms. The building is being renovated into a new high school for Community School of Davidson. Fire officials contacted the construction foreman. He was warned that if the system malfunctioned again, he would have to turn off the system and post a fire watch, documented hourly, until the system is repaired.
SUNDAY, OCT. 11 – 6:33 p.m., 312 Armour St., faulty wiring in an electric stove set off an alarm. Firefighters advised the resident to turn it off until it is repaired.
MONDAY, OCT. 12 - 8:42 a.m., firefighters and police went to the scene of a schoolbus and truck accident on Robert Walker Drive, off Davidson-Concord Road. A Charlotte-Mecklenburg schoolbus headed to Bailey Middle School with 25 passengers had a minor collision with a landscaping truck. One student was treated for possible glass in her face. MONDAY, OCT. 12 - 1:52 p.m., 10124 River Ford Drive, River Run, smoke detector activated unintentionally as workers from PSNC were working on the house. No fire.
MONDAY, OCT. 12 - 9:16 p.m., Westmoreland Road, Cornelius, detector activation, no fire.
TUESDAY, OCT. 13 - 3:16 p.m., Gardners Way and Potter Row, Cornelius – Davidson and Cornelius firefighters went to the scene of a reported gas leak. A worker driving a Ditch Witch excavator accidentally sliced through a gas line. Firefighters and gas company workers clamped three separate gas lines to control the leak.
