Cornelius police said Friday afternoon they have arrested a suspect in Monday morning’s robbery of a woman outside the Food Lion grocery store.

Chavis Kenyada Burton, 25, of North Ferry Street in Cornelius, was arrested Friday, a Cornelius police spokesman said. He was charged with armed robbery and assault on a female and is being held in Mecklenburg County jail.
Cornelius Police Maj. David King said Mr. Burton was arrested at his home on Ferry Street, off Catawba Avenue not far from the Food Lion. Police said the victim identified him from a photo lineup.
On Monday morning, a 21-year-old Cornelius woman told police she was assaulted in the parking lot of the Food Lion off North Main Street in downtown Cornelius. The 21-year-old woman, who is pregnant, told police a man approached her from behind, put a knife to the right side of her stomach, and demanded money. She gave him $14 and he fled.
The woman was taken to Lake Norman Regional Medical Center in Mooresville for examination. She was not seriously injured.
She had told police her assailant was a tall black male. Mr. Burton is 6 feet 1 inch and 190 pounds.
The Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s website lists two other midsemeanor charges against Mr. Burton in recent years.
