Feeling crabby? The story of this groom's cake will make you smile.
Mid-September and things are getting busy! Lots going on in our town this weekend so be sure to check the calendar of events located on this website.
But for today, Around Davidson has news of newlyweds Jake and Leah Catherine Conrad Seaton, a trip to Alaska by Judy and Merle Schuh, notes on this Saturday’s Davidson Garden Club sale, and an assignment for Cold Case enthusiasts!
WEDDING BELLS
Congratulations to Leah Catherine Conrad and Mikel Jeacock Seaton (Jake) who were married on Saturday, August 29. The Reverend Dr. Jody Seymour officiated at the afternoon ceremony held in the Davidson United Methodist Church. Music was provided by Mrs. Janice Bradner at the piano with Dr. Mark Dulin playing the trumpet. Following the church service, the bride’s parents hosted a reception at The Peninsula Club.

Leah Catherine Conrad Seaton on her wedding day
Leah Catherine is the daughter of Ken and Vicky Conrad of East Rocky River Road in Davidson. Jake is the son of Don and Buffy Seaton of Manteo, NC. Leah Catherine is a UNC-Chapel Hill graduate and is employed at Universal Meeting Management in Raleigh as a corporate events planner. Jake graduated from NC State and is a producer at NBC 17 in Raleigh. Following a honeymoon in the Dominican Republic, the couple will make their home in Morrisville.
The wedding weekend was a happy occasion for family and friends beginning with a Friday bridesmaids’ luncheon at The Tea House in Cornelius hosted by the bride’s aunts and grandmother. That evening the groom’s parents hosted a rehearsal dinner at the North Harbor Club, where the hit of the evening was a surprise groom’s cake with a huge crab representing the many crab boils the couple had enjoyed at the beach. Childhood friends of Leah Catherine who were part of the wedding party included Ashley Brown Schneidau, Lauren Junco, Lisa Kauffman and Elodie Sutton Domenge as well as Karen Shurig. Groomsmen included Kyle Conrad, Leah Catherine’s brother, as well as Matthew Buell and Chris Reynolds with Patrick Clark and Ben McNeely serving as ushers. Don Seaton was Best Man for his son.
The day after the wedding, Ken and Vicky Conrad hosted a brunch for the wedding party and out-of-town guests at their home. Congratulations to the Seaton and Conrad families.
PLANTS A-PLENTY
Time to think fall planting!

Rain or shine, these ladies will have plants for you at their annual sale: (l-r) Jane Brumbaugh (co-chair), Kathy Bragg (chair) and Terry Erkes (co-chair).
What better way to choose plants than to talk to the local gardeners who will be selling plants of all kinds this Saturday from 9-12 on the Village Green in Davidson. This sale is the “Annual Davidson Garden Club Sale on The Green” when club members sell a variety of greenery that is ideally suited to our region. In addition to plants, there will be a table laden with home baked goods and also club notecards with designs by Robin Wilgus.
Chair for the event is Kathy Bragg assisted by co-chairs Jane Brumbaugh and Terry Erkes. The Davidson Garden Club is having the sale this weekend in collaboration with the Davidson Lands Conservancy 5K, 10K and half marathon races. Kathy Bragg reminds shoppers that Lorimer Road next to the library will be closed for most of the morning and parking may present a problem. The best idea is to wear comfortable shoes and leave your car in Baker Sports Complex lot. So you don’t have to tote your purchases a long distance, two parking places on Concord Road (at The Green) will be reserved for pick-up of your purchases.
Come check out the plants, receive good gardening tips, munch on cookies, and learn about our garden club as well as our Lands Conservancy.
ALASKA HERE WE COME: The Schuhs Visit our 49th State
Judy and Merle Schuh spent two weeks touring in Alaska last month. The trip was planned to celebrate Judy’s retirement from decades of teaching French in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and the couple’s 40th wedding anniversary. Leaving Davidson on August 8, they flew to Fairbanks and boarded a train to Denali before continuing to Talkeetna and Anchorage. At various stops they enjoyed white-water rafting, “flightseeing,” horseback riding and Iditarod dog team demonstrations.

Horseback riding was part of the fun during the Schuh's Alaska visit.
After seeing the sights in Anchorage, the Schuhs took a boat tour along the Kenai peninsula and the Hammond Glacier before boarding the Celebrity Millennium for a week-long cruise south to Vancouver. (Sound familiar? It is the same cruise ship we mentioned earlier this week that the Stells were on in June.)
As with most cruise ships, there were stops in Juneau, the Mendenhall Glacier, Skagway, Icy Strait Point and Ketchikan. The scenery was breath- taking and each stop provided a glimpse into the culture and history of the area. Judy and Merle had a wonderful time and can’t wait to try another cruise. Returning home, they found that their dog, Doobie, had not taken kindly to their absence and despite friends caring for him, had decided to take his loneliness out on the Schuh’s kitchen stove. Good news is that except for a few tooth marks on the enamel, the stove is once again in working order – and it appears that Doobie has forgiven not being allowed to join in the vacation!
COLD CASE ENTHUSIASTS – LISTEN UP!
Thanks to Susan Nelson who has the perfect answer for those with a few minutes of computer time and an investigative mind. Since rainy, humid, stay-inside weather is forecast for the next five days, Around Davidson has an indoor assignment for YOU! Go straight to your computer. Click on “Unclaimed.org.” Once that page comes up, scroll down to National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators (NAUPA) and click on that. When a map of the USA appears, you will need to click on North Carolina. Now go to the right hand box and click on “Search by City” below the “search” box.
Almost there. Type in Davidson (or any other NC city you wish to investigate). In the name block, simply type in the first letter of your last name, i.e., “b” for Barger – nothing else. Click on “search” and PRESTO! pages of unclaimed assets for last names of current and former Davidson residents beginning with “B” will appear. You will see neighbors, friends, deceased family members among the names. All have unclaimed assets lining the “cold case” coffers of the NC Department of Revenue.
Lastly, if you found yourself or a close relative and wish to file a claim, click on “generate claim” and submit the form for untold riches to pad your wallet. Just remember that DavidsonNews.net gets a percentage of any newly found wealth. (Just kidding but we do always accept donations of any size!)
