Cornelius police are searching for a man with a knife who attacked a woman in the Food Lion parking lot Monday morning and made off with $14 cash. The police have no primary suspect and a limited description, Maj. David King said Tuesday morning. They’re looking for a tall black male wearing a yellowish plaid shirt and dark pants.

The 21-year-old victim lives not far from the Food Lion, which is off North Main Street and Catawba Avenue in Cornelius. She told police she was walking to her car around 10:45 a.m. Monday when a man approached her from behind. He held a knife to the right side of her stomach and demanded money. After she gave him $14 cash, he pushed her to the ground.

The woman is pregnant and was taken to Lake Norman Regional Medical Center after the incident. Maj.King said she was not seriously hurt.

The suspect is at least 6 feet 1 inch tall. He was last seen running east toward North Main Street/Hwy. 115 after the assault, Maj. King said.

Police have no other witnesses. Anyone with information may call Cornelius police at 704-892-1363.

SCHOOL LOCKDOWN

At least one Cornelius school was on alert after the incident. Bailey Middle School on Bailey Road, about two miles from the store, went into “modified lockdown” for a time, DavidsonNews.net‘s Laurie Dennis reports. Exterior doors were locked until the school got an all-clear sign from police. The principal informed parents in an automated telephone call.
