The school year is now in full swing and the September calendar is already filling up with sports events, club activities and more.  We have highlights below of upcoming seminars on Internet Safety (at Bailey Middle), and Advocating for your Child (at Cannon School), along with Parent University workshops on building homework skills and learning to use the “CMS Study Island” technology to help your child take pretests and post tests and keep learning fun.

INTERNET SAFETY SEMINAR

Lindsey Deere, Assistant Special Counsel with the North Carolina Department of Justice, will present an hour-long, general seminar on Internet Safety and Cybercrime Awareness Thursday, Sept. 10, starting at 6:30 p.m. at Bailey Middle School.  The event is cosponsored by the Cornelius Police Department and the Bailey Middle PTA.

Ms. Deere will discuss the dangers of the Internet to minors (solicitation, exposure, and threats/harassment), and what parents can do to keep minors safe while they use the Internet.  The free seminar will be held in the school cafeteria.

PARENT UNIVERSITY SEMINARS ON HOMEWORK HELP

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) will be hosting two “Parent University” seminars at Bailey Middle School in Cornelius.  The seminars are free and will run from 6-7 p.m. on the dates listed below:

The first, “Building Study Skills and Avoiding Homework Headache,” will be held on Monday, Sept. 14, and led by Jennifer Parker.

The second, “CMS Study Island: Technology You Can Use at Home to Make Learning Fun,” will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 15.   “Study Island” is an online product used in CMS to help students master the standards specific to their grade. Parents receive a login name and password from their school. From there, students can take pre-tests, study various topics, and take post-tests. The system also has a game mode that makes learning fun. Participants will learn more about this new way to reinforce learning at home.

Parent University is a collaborative effort to provide CMS families with useful information and support.

PARENTING TALK AT CANNON SCHOOL

Parenting educator Cheryl Wolfe will speak at Cannon School on Monday, Sept. 21, starting at 6:30 p.m. in Taylor Hall on the school’s campus, located at 5801 Poplar Tent Road in Concord. Wolfe’s lecture, “The Three Knows for Parents – Advocating for Your Child in the Classroom” is free and open to the public.

The lecture will focus on how becoming familiar with developmental stages and ages is aimed to help parents better know their child, their educational program, and the options available should challenges arise.

Wolfe is a member of the National Lecture Staff of the Gesell Institute of Human Development a non-profit organization associated with how children learn and grow.  She joined Gesell four years ago and travels nationally presenting workshops to parents, educators, and other professionals.

Cannon School is a private academy located in Concord.

JOIN SCOUTING NIGHT

If your child would enjoy outdoor adventures and learning cool skills and earning badges, you may want to consider joining a Davidson scouting den or troop. Representatives of Cub Scouts and Girls Scouts will be available for interested families Thursday, Sept. 17, starting at 7 p.m. at Davidson Elementary School.

For Cub Scouts, leaders from Cub Pack 58, which is chartered by the Davidson Lions, will be on hand at Join Scouting Night.  Any interested boy who stops by will have a chance to earn a “Cub Scout belt loop” in marbles, while parents can find out about Cub programs.  The Cub Scouts informational meeting will be held in the lunchroom; boys will be taking part in activities in the school gym. Cub scouts is open to any interested boy in grades 1-5.

Representatives of the Hornet’s Nest District for Girl Scouts will be located in the school media center to talk about girl scouting and forming new troops.  Girl Scouts starts in kindergarten with the Daisy rank and continues through high school.

• THURSDAY, SEPT. 10 – Curriculum Night at Davidson Elementary for grades 3-5, 6:30 – 8 p.m.; and also at Davidson IB Middle, 6:30 – 8 p.m.
• MON.-TUESDAY, SEPT. 14-15 – The CMS Parent University program will hold evening seminars on homework skills and using technology at home.  See above for more information.
• MON.-TUESDAY, SEPT. 14-15 -Curriculum nights for Bailey Middle.  Parents can follow their students’ class schedules, 7-8 p.m.  Monday is for 6th grade families only.  Tuesday is for 7th and 8th grade families.
• WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 16 – First “Walk to School Wednesday” of the year for Davidson Day School.
• THURSDAY, SEPT. 17 – Join Scouting night will feature information for interested boys and girls at Davidson Elementary, starting at 7 p.m.  See above for more information.

• TUESDAY, SEPT. 22 – Curriculum night for the middle school at Community School of Davidson, 7-9 p.m.
• WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 23 – First “Walk to School Wednesday” of the year for Community School of Davidson.
• WED.-FRIDAY, SEPT. 23-25 –  Davidson Day will hold parent conferences Wednesday and Thursday, 5-8 p.m., and then school will be closed on Friday.
• SATURDAY, SEPT. 26 – The Children’s Schoolhouse of Huntersville will host its 28th Annual Fall Carnival Saturday, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the Davidson village green.  Admission is free.  Enjoy crafts, pony rides, a cake walk, a rock climbing wall, a bounce house and more.  Tickets can be purchased for games and raffle prizes. The Children’s Schoolhouse is a nonprofit, cooperative preschool for 3, 4, and 5 year olds. This event is the school’s largest fundraiser.
• MONDAY, SEPT. 28 – CMS schools (including Bailey Middle, Davidson Elementary, Davidson IB, and North Meck High) will be closed for a teacher workday.  This is also a teacher workday for several area charter schools, including Community School of Davidson and Pine Lake Prep.
