One of the oldest continuing traditions of the new school year at Davidson College is the Freshman Cake Race, a 1.7-mile foot race. This year’s 70th running is Wednesday, Aug. 26, at 5 p.m. at Richardson Stadium.
The tradition calls for people in the community to contribute cakes that are given away as prizes to race finishers. Runners pick a cake after they cross the line. Last year, 140 cakes were contributed, enough for all but two runners. (Not all of the 491 freshmen participate.)
Find out how you can contribute a cake below.
The first Freshman Cake Race was organized in 1934, to help the track coach spot potential recruits. The race has been run every year except World War II and 1972.
CAKES WANTED
Organizers say cakes may be delivered to the lobby of the college’s Baker Sports Complex before 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 26. If you’re on campus, they’ll pick it up that afternoon, 1-3 p.m. Tape your name on the bottom of your cake unless you wish to remain anonymous. Please send your cake on a disposable plate (paper plate, foil covered cardboard).
Please email Brenda Daugherty at brdaugherty@davidson.edu or call 704-894-2342 by Monday, Aug. 24, if you plan to bring a cake.
