After a quiet summer, Davidson is springing back to life. The coffee shop is just a bit busier. Town sidewalks are filled with jogging athletes. And signs are popping up on the Davidson College campus pointing parents to their students’ dorms.
Today (Wednesday) things will be noticably busier, as 491 members of Davidson College’s Class of 2013 move into their dorms in time for this week’s orientation activities. If you’re on campus this evening between 6 and 9, you may find President Tom Ross and about 100 upper-class student volunteers helping them move in.

Author Tobias Wolff here Sept. 8Tobias Wolff, author of “This Boy’s Life” and “Old School,” among other books, will speak and sign books at the college on Tuesday, Sept. 8, at 7:30 p.m. in Duke Family Performance Hall. The event is free and open to the public. “Old School” is the first-year reading assignment for Davidson freshmen this fall, and the opening event in a year-long Celebration of Honor and Integrity at the college. College officials say “Old School” was chosen as the college’s first-year reading because of its focus on, among other things, honor, integrity, plagiarism and literature. Details on the college website. |
The first big gathering of the new class is the annual President’s Convocation Thursday night, Aug. 20, at 7:30 at Davidson College Presbyterian Church. President Ross and Alumni Director Peter Wagner are scheduled to introduce incoming freshmen and their parents to the college’s history and traditions.
A “farewell lunch” on the front campus lawn Friday will send off parents, as orientation activities continue. They include a student athletic competition at Baker Sports Complex Friday night (a sort of freshman field day), the annual “Community Service Walk” through town streets Saturday from 9 to noon, and the 70th running of the Freshman Cake Race – a 1.7-mile run that rewards many finishers with cakes baked by community members.
(Cakes are needed for the cake race. If you’re interested in supplying a cake, you can bring it to the lobby of Baker Sports Complex before 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 26. Or they’ll pick it up from an on-campus location that day. Call Brenda Daugherty at 704-894-2342 or email brdaugherty@davidson.edu.)
Meanwhile, first-year students are reading together even before classes begin. This year’s assignment is “Old School” by Tobias Wolff. (See box.)
