Nominations are being accepted through Aug. 31 for the town’s annual G. Jackson Burney Community Service Award. The award has been given annually since 2004 in honor of the late Mr. Burney and honors residents who have demonstrated unselfish service to the Davidson community.
The award is presented at a community event at Town Hall the Wednesday morning before Thanksgiving.
Mr. Burney “was a true friend of Davidson. Jack led a life dedicated to improving the quality of life all around him and that was especially true in all his dealings with the town,” according to an announcement of the award.
Mr. Burney helped to create the Charlotte Census tracts for the U.S. Department of Commerce and ran the Charlotte Chamber Economic Development program for 10 years. He was a delegate to a White House conference on Balanced Growth and Economic Development and a technical adviser to the North Carolina Governor’s Conference on Balanced Growth.
In Davidson, Jack founded the Town Message and published several other newsletters, including one focusing on downtown. He was a frequent volunteer for town initiatives.
The 2008 award went to John & Paula Kelton.
Nominations are accepted on the town Website, or in person or by phone at Town Hall. Deadline for submissions is Aug. 31.
