Whoopee! Caleb Readling enjoys a zip line during a recent Boy Scout Troop 58 outing.
Already the middle of July? Hard to believe the summer is passing so quickly. Many of our younger residents have been to camps near and far. Next week Around Davidson will report on Vacation Bible School and Music Camps in our community. Today, however, we have news of Boy Scout Troop 58′s week spent at Camp Grimes.
In addition there is news from Danny and Wendy Faucette of the ordination of their son-in-law, Tim Reimer.
We also want to highlight a separate report on DavidsonNews.net by Michele Houck, an active member of our community and enthusiastic DNN fan. She shares her notes from a recent “Urban Poverty Train” trip with youth from our town. Click here to access her report.
TIM REIMER IS ORDAINED
June 13 was a happy day for the Faucette and Reimer families as they gathered with relatives and friends for the evening ordination service of Tim Reimer at Lake Junaluska. This service was held during the Methodist’s Western North Carolina Annual Conference.
Tim has been an associate minister at Mt. Zion Methodist Church since his graduation from Duke Divinity School three years ago. The senior minister at Mt. Zion, Mike Bailey, has been his ever present mentor and was on the Junaluska stage with Tim for the ordination. Before the service, Mike and his wife, Lauralee, hosted a cookout for Tim and his family at their mountain home near the conference center.

A proud Tim Reimer stand with his wife, Katie, and sons, Owen and Eli.
Tim is well known in the Cornelius and Davidson communities as he married Katie Faucette, daughter of Wendy and Danny Faucette, who live in Davidson and are longtime members of the Davidson United Methodist Church (DUMC). Current and former staff members of DUMC traveled to the NC mountains making Tim’s ordination even more meaningful: Kevin Turner, Music Director, sang; the Rev. John Palmer Smith (earlier Music Director who played at Tim and Katie’s 2005 wedding) performed the music; and the Rev. Jody Seymour, DUMC senior minister, placed the stole on Tim with a big smile and hug.
Katie and Tim Reimer’s sons, Owen (2) and Eli (6 mos), were present for the ceremony. Also attending were Tim’s parents, Dennis and Jeanie Reimer, his sister, Katie, and brother, Brian. Katie’s parents were there as well as her brother, Brian, grandmother, Arlene Lewey, and aunt, Sue Hudson. A number of Mt. Zion delegates to the conference and several other friends were on hand to congratulate Tim.
Prior to the ordination weekend, Wendy and Danny Faucette enjoyed a week of relaxation at Lake Junaluska with Tim, Katie and the boys and “Nana” Lewey. What happy memories for all the family.
A WEEK WITH THE BOY SCOUTS AT CAMP GRIMES
Davidson’s own Boy Scout Troop 58 always likes to reserve an early spot at Camp Grimes, the Boy Scout camp for Mecklenburg County, and this summer the troop was there for the very first week, June 21-27. Camp Grimes is located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains near Dysartsville, NC. The camp runs continuously for five weeks during the summer with troops coming on Sunday afternoon and leaving the following Saturday morning. A telephone call to Dave Ritchie, the council’s Program Director for Mecklenburg County, told us that the camp can accommodate 350-400 campers at one time, along with some 75-85 adult leaders and a staff of 60.

Dave mentioned that Mountain Boarding (skateboarding downhill) was an added activity this year. Also, merit badges in Photography and Cinematography were new offerings. Not many return to Davidson cheering about the food but all return with wonderful memories of fellowship, foolishness, teamwork and many, many merit badges earned.
Kudos to Scoutmaster John Bragg who spent the entire week at camp and even found time evenings to email parents about activities and accomplishments. Assistant Scoutmasters John DeCarolis, Bruce Smith, Gerardo Marti (dubbed the “urban scout” after finding out that he grew up in a suburb of LA and spent most of his life stuck in traffic on the Santa Monica freeway), Wendy Readling and Heather Smith also spent all or a portion of the week helping. John notes about the week are worth including here:
“Boy Scout Troop 58 made their annual trek at the end of June to Camp Grimes for a week of fun, adventure and merit badges. The boys worked on fire building and first aid skills, aquatic safety and rescue techniques, canoeing and sailing as well as rifle shooting, archery, blacksmithing, rocketry, zip line and rappelling, pottery and fly fishing. The boys earned over 40 merit badges during their week at camp. It was a great week of learning new skills, building character and developing stronger friendships.

Troop 58 was proud to come home with two awards from the week at camp. At the closing campfire, Collin Griggs was awarded the plaque for the Most Fish Caught. Collin fished every minute he could spare; getting up at 5:00 before reveille, catching a few before lunch and fishing until near dark. His total of 56 fish blew away his next closest competitor. Senior Patrol Leader Patrick Griffeth and Scoutmaster John Bragg won first place in the Scoutmaster/Senior Patrol Leader Turkey Shoot. The competition involved archery, rifle shooting and shotgun shooting. Patrick reported that, “We were a little weak in archery, but did well in rifles, and smoked ‘em, going five for five, in the skeet shooting!”
Camp was attended by Senior Patrol Leaders: Patrick Griffeth, & Camden Griggs; Saber Patrol: Adam Brown (patrol leader), Collin Griggs, Chad Parrish, Jeremy Collier, Robert Carmichael and Chandler Harlan; Falcon Patrol: John Wacker (patrol leader), Jack Carmichael, William DeCarolis, Caleb Readling, Jared Smith and Zachery Marti; Red Bull Patrol: Andrew Harris (patrol leader), Daniel Griffeth, David Shaw, Tyler Smith, Frank Bragg and Ian Ruppenthal.
(Troop 58 is sponsored by the Davidson Lions Club and meets Tuesday nights at 7:00 in the Fellowship Hall of DCPC. The troop will celebrate its 75th anniversary in Davidson next year. For more information about the troop and the coming high adventure fall calendar, contact Scoutmaster John Bragg at 704-377-0261.)
