Officials and supporters of the nonprofit North Mecklenburg Senior Center in Cornelius are trying to save the center, which is in danger of closing because of funding cuts.
Senior Center officials said at a press conference Thursday that the center will close in 90 days unless they can raise money by the end of September to keep it open.
The United Way cut $66,000 from its allocation to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Senior Centers, prompting the group’s board to call for the closing.
In response, officials and supporters of the senior center have begun a “Save the North Meck Center” campaign.
In a note to public officials in the area, center director Joanne Ahern said those interested can send contributions to North Meck Senior Center, P.O.Box 1578, Cornelius, NC 28031 or Charlotte Mecklenburg Senior Centers, 2225 Tyvola Road, Charlotte NC 28210. Be sure to note on your check that you want it to go for “Save the North Meck Center.” More about the organization: CMSeniorcenters.org.
