Davidson College professor Mike Dorcas and his students last week implanted radio transmitters into 7 Burmese pythons that are part of a study in South Carolina to determine if the big snakes can survive farther north in the southeastern U.S.
The snakes were captured in Florida and brought to a research center in South Carolina, where Prof. Dorcas and other experts are studying whether they can survive this far north.
The question is whether there’s a threat that pythons in the wild could make their way farther northward.
A wire service news story about the research last week briefly put Prof. Dorcas and Davidson into the national spotlight, after being picked by more than 200 news outlets nationwide.
