Terri Cockerham
Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools has named a veteran leader as principal of the new Bailey Road High School in Cornelius. Dr. Terri Cockerham starts her job on July 1. The new school is under construction and will open for the 2010-11 school year, serving students from Davidson and elsewhere in north Mecklenburg, most of whom previously were in the North Mecklenburg and Hopewell High zones.
Dr. Cockerham has been principal at Providence High School in Charlotte since 2005 and has worked for CMS since 1983.
“I look forward to working with parents, students and members of the new Bailey Road high school community,” Dr. Cockerham said in an announcement on the CMS website. “I will miss the Providence High family, but I know I will bring that school’s successes with me as we build a new Bailey Road family.”
Before Providence High, Dr. Cockerham was principal of Eastway Middle School from 1997 to 2005, and was an assistant principal at several schools before that.
Her educational background includes a bachelor’s degree from Wake Forest University and master’s and doctorate degrees from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She also holds a Certificate in Advanced Study in Educational Administration from UNCC.
Also this week, CMS announced the appointment of Mark Nixon as principal of its other new high school, in Mint Hill.
CORRECTION: The opening date for the new schools is the 2010-11 school year.
