Summer (almost) weekends are filled with fun! This past Saturday evening was the first (of many, we hope) celebrations to honor David Boraks and this website. Then on Sunday evening, baseball enthusiasts celebrated our own Christina Tarry as she sang the national anthem at the beginning of the Kannapolis Intimidators game. Kudos to Christina on being chosen for this honor. You wowed the crowd! What a wonderful, diverse, and talented population we have in our little town.
Around Davidson has a round-up of notes from the “MicroBrews for MicroNews” party and introduces you to a member of the DavidsonNews.net staff, Lyndsay Kibiloski. There is also news of Blanche Parker’s trip to Chapel Hill to accept an honor for her late husband and a Croatian travel report from Lemie and Norman Richards.
HOORAY FOR DNN
DNN – short for DavidsonNews.net – celebrated 2 1/2 years of bringing news to residents of Davidson this past Saturday evening with a “MicroBrews and MicroNews” event. Many thanks to organizers Shelley Rigger, Motria Procyk, Rea Wright, Charlotte Neal, Cameron Swallow, Cary Johnston and Lyndsay Kibiloski, who made the party at Summit Coffee such a big success.
Perfect weather allowed space for friends of all ages to visit and sip wine or iced coffee, while listening to the music of Davidson Express or Rusty Knox and Friends. The adjacent playground was ideal for the small fry and the “decorate a party hat” tent organized by Emma Boraks, 11, caught the attention of young artists. Thanks to all who attended and thanks to the many donors of gift baskets and door prizes. Keeping up with WFAE, two gift baskets came with the chance to have David Boraks’ voice on your home answering machine! The surprised and delighted winners were Loretta Wertheimer and Evalyn and Van Crawford.
Be sure to check out the photo gallery from the party. (And no, the Bargers were not fussing at Mayor Woods!)
MEET LYNDSAY K.

Lyndsay kept track of t-shirts and prizes for the DNN party.
Selling DNN T-shirts and welcoming guests at Saturday’s party was Lyndsay Kibiloski – easier just to write Lyndsay K. rather than spell her name wrong! This energetic young lady came to DavidsonNews.net in September 2008. According to her bio sketch, she “handles ad and website design for David Boraks, manages invoices and receipts, helps plot strategy and generally keeps David on his toes!”
Lyndsay comes to Davidson via Michigan where she grew up. She attended Central Michigan University, Western Michigan University and the Center for New Media in Kalamazoo, changed her major often and then settled on graphic design, receiving her degree in 2007. Tired of the winters in Michigan, she packed her bags and headed south to Atlanta. En-route she stopped in Davidson and decided North Carolina was sunny enough to stay awhile. We are so glad Lyndsay is here. The DNN website looks better every month thanks to her talents.
Lyndsay also has a website of her own. Please drop in and visit at www.dontspellmynamewrong.com.
CHARLES PARKER IS HONORED
May 17 was a special date for the Parker family and especially his widow, Blanche, when Charles Parker, Wildcats’ wrestling coach for Davidson College for four decades until his death in 1979, was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. Charlie was one of six honored in the ceremony at the William Friday Center in Chapel Hill. Some from our area who wrestled under “Coach Charlie” at Davidson and attended the celebration in Chapel Hill included William Mills, Dave Fagg, and Frank Rader.

It was a busy weekend for the Parker family. May 17 began with the baptism of a great granddaughter at the Davidson College Presbyterian Church. Following lunch at Tim and Stella Parker Stroud’s home on Dogwood Lane, the family traveled to Chapel Hill for the presentation of the plaque honoring Charlie. Blanche and Charlie married in 1938 and had five children. Blanche now lives at The Pines and counts 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren among the offspring.
Many of these were in attendance at the Friday Center including daughter, Janice Gregory with her husband, Bob, and granddaughter, Susan Tindel from Florida. Another daughter, Glenda Jones lives in Chapel Hill. Son Buzz and his wife, Bonnie, drove over from Pinehurst. Son Bruce and his wife Laura Beth came from Charlotte. Grandson Kevin Jones came from Morehead City with his wife, Irene and from Wilmington was granddaughter, Britt Earie. Another granddaughter Allison Coburn and her husband, Brad, flew in from Mill Valley, CA. Traveling with Blanche from Davidson were daughter Stella and Tim Stroud as well as granddaughter Kristen Eshleman and her husband, Joe.
The plaque honoring Charles Parker will find a place in the trophy case in the Baker Sports Center at Davidson College. The “ceremonial jacket” presented to Blanche will no doubt be proudly worn by one of their sons. Congratulations to all the family.
THE RICHARDS TOUR IN CROATIA
Norman and Lemie Richards spent two weeks last month touring the Dalmatian Coast. Flying into the Croatian airport of Split, they joined a group of 16 others for a European Walking Tour (EWT) offered by Elderhostel. The tour was called “Discovering Croatia’s Hidden Treasures.”

Each day the group was transported by coach or boat to a starting point for a hike of one to three hours duration. Most paths took them along trails with splendid views of the Adriatic Sea. They visited and hiked in the Koziak Mountains, Krka National Park, Makarska, the Island of Brac and of course, Dubrovnik, called by many “the Pearl of the Adriatic.”
The Richards thought the tour guides and the local city guides were excellent. All “lectures” were in “the field” so to speak, never in a classroom. Norman commented that they had perfect weather, ate good food and enjoyed the wines of the area. The others in their group were congenial and the Richards found the Croatian people delightful. Certainly a highlight for Lemie and Norman was the spectacular scenery with abundant wildflowers they encountered daily on their hikes.
A PERSONAL NOTE ABOUT NEWS
Writing for DavidsonNews.net has been eye-opening for me. With the help of David Boraks and Laurie Dennis, both trained journalists, I now can “let my fingers do the walking” around the computer keyboard with a certain amount of expertise. Seeing news of Davidson and our surrounding area posted quickly and accurately is wonderful. Also, accessing newspapers from around the country and around the world on the Internet is great.
Many people still like to hold a newspaper in their hands and leisurely page through the sections. I have been one of those – subscribing to the Charlotte Observer for 34 years. But just last week, I weaned myself of the newsprint tossed daily in our driveway. Why? Because of an ever shrinking paper, syndicated news rather than local writers, Sunday Neighbors being anything but, and a sorry crossword puzzle!
The notice came in the mail stating that my annual payment was due with my subscription expiring three weeks ahead of last year’s. Why? I asked when I called. “The cost of the paper has increased” was the answer and thus my annual subscription had three weeks cut off. Talk about a public relations scheme gone bad! In addition to letting their best writers go, McClatchy newspapers have also eliminated their PR personnel it seems.
Old habits die hard – but Internet news is my new habit. Thanks, David, for DNN and for pushing me (with great patience) into the 21st century of computer savvy. Our family supports your efforts with ever greater enthusiasm.
