Davidson Housing Coalition announcement
The Davidson Housing Coalition will open the newly renovated Ralph Johnson house after a ribbon cutting on Friday, Feb. 27 at 10 a.m.
The house, at 115 Mock Circle on Davidson’s West Side, was built in 1924 and was the home of African-American businessman, barber and land owner Ralph Johnson. Ralph and his sister, Erving, lived in the family home until 2001 when they donated the house, along with other properties on the West Side, to Davidson College.
The college gave the properties to Davidson Housing Coalition, along with a $500,000 construction grant for additional affordable housing for lower-income families. The result was Creekside Corner, apartments at Sloan Street and Mock Circle. The renovated house now contains a 3-bedroom apartment downstairs and a 1-bedroom apartment upstairs.
Rental applications available at the Davidson Housing Coalition office.
“Creekside Corner and the completion of the Ralph Johnson house rehabilitation (are) an excellent example of collaboration between the Town of Davidson, Davidson College and Davidson Housing Coalition,” said Marcia Webster, executive director of DHC. “Through the donation of property from the College and the availability of HOME funding through the Town of Davidson, we are able to make this historic house a beautiful, new home to our lower-wealth men, women and children.”
The public is invited to the ribbon cutting and tour of the Ralph Johnson House.
Davidson Housing Coalition, a nonprofit organization, was created in 1996 to work with the greater community to preserve and create affordable housing options and to prepare families and individuals for financial stability and homeownership.
