RACHEL’S NEW GIG
WDAV, the Davidson-based classical public radio station at 89.9 FM, has unveiled a new locally produced Sunday morning show that will bring back to the airwaves Rachel Stewart, a station veteran and longtime Davidson resident.

Rachel Stewart
“Biscuits and Bach” debuts this Sunday, from 8 to 11 a.m., as part of a new weekend programming lineup. (See below.) Ms. Stewart’s new three-hour program will feature music from the Renaissance to the Baroque and beyond.
“We’ve been working to bring more regional flavor and great local appeal to all the shows we produce here at WDAV,” WDAV General Manager Benjamin K. Roe said in a press release. “And we’re taking the idea pretty literally in the case of Biscuits & Bach!”
Ms. Stewart is a former program director who now serves as the station’s new media director. The idea for the new show came during last fall’s on-air pedge drive. “Jennifer Foster and I were on the air together one Sunday,” Ms. Stewart said. “We talked about favorite recipes – foods we associate with different kinds of music. We were overwhelmed by the listeners’ responses – both with their membership pledges and their recipes. Now with ‘Biscuits & Bach,’ we can really explore those cultural connections.”
Said Mr. Roe: “Rachel has this great low-key — but sharp — demeanor. It’s the perfect style to marry to this musical period and to anchor our new Sunday line-up.”

BETH SHALOM ADDS TANENBAUM
Beth Shalom of Lake Norman has hired Kara Tanenbaum as its first B’Nai Mitzvah and youth programming coordinator. In this position, Ms. Tannenbaum will coordinate all activities for children in preparation for their Bar or Bat Mitzvahs, including tutoring. She will also serve as youth leader, working on programs for 6th graders through high schoolers.

Kara Tanenbaum
Since joining Beth Shalom of Lake Norman 10 months ago, Ms. Tanenbaum has joined the Synagogue Board as ritual chair and has tutored students in both Torah and Tefillah. She brings over 15 years of experience as a Jewish Educator, working with Jewish youth in Conservative, Reform & Reconstructionist synagogues. She has worked in religious schools, tutored B’Nai Mitzvah students, taught adult Hebrew and worked in Camp Ramah in the Berkshire Mountains.
Before moving to Charlotte from Atlanta, Ms. Tanenbaum held a position as Youth Director at Congregation Etz Chaim in Marietta, Ga.
Ms. Tanenbaum has also just accepted the position of executive assistant to Executive Director Sue Worrel at Jewish Federation of Greater Charlotte.
Ms. Tanenbaum leads Shabbat services the 2nd Friday of each month at Davidson College’s Alvarez College Union. Services begin at 6:15 p.m.
NEW SGA LEADERS AT COLLEGE
Davidson College press release
Davidson students won’t have any trouble finding their newly elected Student Government Association president in the college directory. Though first in their choice of candidates, she’s the final name in the book — Meikaela M. Zwieryznski.
Ms. Zwieryznski, a Belk Scholar from Pittsburgh, will serve with newly elected vice president, Baker E.L. Shogry, an economics major from Greensboro.
Ms. Zwieryznski takes her unusual names in stride. “Most people assume I’m an international student,” she said. “The funny thing is that my first name is Portuguese and my last is Polish, but I’m neither! My mother is 100 percent Irish, adopted into the US by my grandparents who were Hungarian and Polish first generation immigrants.”
New officers will be sworn in Wednesday, Feb. 25.
Ms. Zwieryznski plans to spend some of the time before then creating a new SGA web site, blog and podcast page to facilitate communication between the organization and its constituency.
A double major in Spanish and political science, Ms. Zwieryznski also was student body president in high school and has served SGA throughout her Davidson career.
Mr. Shogry, the son of a 1981 Davidson graduate, is only in his second semester of SGA participation. He was a representative of SAE fraternity last year, and rejoined this semester after spending the fall semester studying in Geneva, Switzerland. “I got the bug again while I was abroad,” he said. “I recognized how much I enjoy discussing issues and helping students work on campus issues.”
