Is it real magic, or just a publicity stunt?
In a build-up to his performance Tuesday, Feb. 17, at Davidson College, magician Mike Super has begun to mystify people before he even sets foot on campus – with a sealed prediction to be unveiled the night of the show.
Last Friday morning, Feb. 6, Davidson College Union officials received an express package from Super’s office in Cleveland, Ohio. Inside was an audio cassette and a piece of paper in an envelope. Super said that the paper was inscribed with his prediction for the front page headline of The Charlotte Observer for the day of his performance, and the audio cassette likewise was recorded with the same prediction in his spoken voice. Super promised to unveil both at the performance.
College Union officials put the package into a suitcase and chained it shut. For added security, they raised the suitcase high into the atrium of the Knobloch Campus Center, where it will remain suspended until the night of the performance.
At 8 p.m. on Feb. 17, when the performance begins in Duke Family Performance Hall, it will be lowered and placed in the custody of Davidson College Chief of Police Fountain Walker. Chief Walker will ensure Super never touches the suitcase until he’s ready to reveal his prediction to the audience during the show.
Super will appear at Davidson as part of the C. Shaw and Nancy K. Smith Artist Series.
As the winner of the NBC reality TV show “Phenomenon,” Super may be considered as America’s greatest living magician. He enhances his inexplicable illusions with an inimitable personality. On stage he shares his personal story while restoring for the audience the child-like sense of wonder that anything is possible. He takes the audience on a roller coaster ride of laughter, intrigue, fear, anticipation, tears, and sentimentality.
Those interested in seeing whether Super correctly predicts the newspaper headline may purchase tickets at the Davidson College Union ticket office Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., or call 704-894-2135. Tickets can also be purchased online at www.davidson.edu/tickets.
