DavidsonNews.net‘s community calendar this week previews a wide range of activities, from Tuesday’s monthly Town Board meeting to “Green Week” events at Davidson College, including Wednesday’s lecture by journalist Paul Roberts on “The End of Food” and the Friday the 13th “Green Ball.” Meanwhile, jazz trumpeter Brian Lewis and pianist Ursula Oppens are in town for concerts.

In sports, Davidson’s men’s basketball team is on the road for two games – at Wofford Thursday and at Furman Saturday. The women’s team hosts UT-Chattanooga Saturday afternoon for a “Pink Zone” fund-raiser for cancer.

Green eggs & ham (OK, actually spinach and ham quiche) will be on the menu at the college’s Union Cafe. WEDNESDAY, FEB. 11, 7:30 p.m., Davidson College Alvarez College Union 900 Room – Green Week continues with a lecture by award-winning journalist Paul Roberts, author of “The End of Oil” and “The End of Food.” He will speak about “The End of Food: Injustices in the Global Food System.” The lecture will be followed by a book signing. Mr. Roberts also will participate in a public roundtable discussion at 3 p.m. in Room 302 of the union.

The concert is presented by the Adams Foundation Piano Series and the Davidson College music department. Ms. Oppens, a professor at Brooklyn College and CUNY Graduate Center in New York City, has appeared as soloist with major orchestras throughout the United States and Europe, including the New York Philharmonic and London Philharmonic Orchestras, and the Berlin Symphony. FRIDAY, FEB. 13, 8-11 p.m., Chambers Building on the campus of Davidson College – The Third Annual Davidson Green Ball, a fundraiser for the Davidson Lands Conservancy and part of Davidson College’s Green Week activities. The featured band for this night of contra dancing will be Appalachian Storm and the caller will be Kenny Greer. Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door and $5 for children.

He’ll play “Adagio for Strings” by Barber, “Toccata Kopanitsa” by Tikker, “Marche des Marseillis” by Balbastre, “Prelude, Fugue and Variation” by Fanck, and “Eclogue for Piano and Orchestra.” The concert is free, but free-will offerings will be accepted to help pay for the church’s new Music Academy, which provides free music education to students who cannot afford lessons. FEB. 18-22, Davidson College Cunningham Theatre Center – “The Ghost Sonata,” by August Strindberg, translated by Evert Sprinchorn, directed by Steve Foglia ’09. A terrifying world populated by vampires, mummies, and ghosts is the setting for this student-directed classic. The bus will visit downtown, South Main Street, Sadler Square and the Harris Teeter shopping center near Exit 30. Cost: $1 per roundtrip.
