Angie and Joe Grooms
Angie Grooms, director of Corporate Environmental Health and Safety for Duke Energy, will address Davidson College Presbyterian Church’s Green Group on Tuesday, Feb. 10, at 10 a.m. in the Congregation House, 208 Concord Rd.
Ms. Grooms will discuss energy efficiency and sustainability on a corporate and individual level. The Green Group includes men and women dedicated to caring for God’s creation. The talk is free and open to the public.
In her job, Ms. Grooms is responsible for representing Duke Energy on several national environmental groups. She is chair of the Utility Water Act Group (a national electric industry association dealing with Clean Water Act), the communications chair for GEMI (Global Environmental Management Initiative), and the team leader for the World Association of Nuclear Operators/DPC exchange on environmental and analytical issues at the Zaporozhe Nuclear Plant in Energodar, Ukraine.
Ms. Grooms and husband Joe have been members of DCPC for more than 20 years. Her professional commitment to the environment comes through in their personal lives. They designed and built their mountain cabin in southern Virginia to be as green as possible. It is “off-grid’ and uses solar panels to generate power, CFLs for lighting, water-based (versus petroleum-based) cabinet finishes, and engineered, laminated logs. Their next green goal? They’ve been checking on the possibility of using on-site wind generation.
