DavidsonReads, a townwide reading program that includes lectures, book discussions and other events, is seeking nominations now through Feb. 20 for this year’s community read.

This year is the third for the program, which had us all reading “The Bridge,” by Doug Marlette, in 2007, and “One Foot in Eden,” by Ron Rash, last year.

“People bond over a good book and when people get to talking about books, it helps them find commonalities, make friends and broaden their horizons,” said Lisa Jewel, who has taken over as the chair of DavidsonReads. She replaced Cristina Shaul, who helped found the program in 2007.

This year, the community reading book will be chosen following nominations from the community.

“We are excited to see what our residents are interested in reading,” Ms. Jewel, said in a press release. “There are so many book clubs in this area. We’re sure we will get some great book recommendations.”

This year, the committee is expanding the program by asking residents what they want to read.

The DavidsonReads committee has put ballot boxes around town to collect nominations now through Feb. 20. They’re at the Davidson Public Library, Davidson Town Hall, Davidson Parks & Recreation Office, Main Street Books and other shops and restaurants along Main Street. You can also make a suggestion at DavidsonReads.org.

The committee will review the entries, pick three finalists and residents will vote on the final selection. First-round voting will take place until Feb. 20 and voting for the final three books will begin March 11.

DavidsonReads is a partnership between the Town of Davidson Parks & Recreation Department, the Davidson Public Library, Main Street Books and town residents.
