Farallon Recorder Quartet performs in the Music at St. Alban's series Sunday.

Today’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day and the Presidential Inauguration Tuesday put the focus on the national scene this week, but local events will help us all reflect and celebrate. On Wednesday, the Design Review Board meets to take a look at the latest designs for the proposed Davidson IB Middle School renovation and town community center project, as well as the site plan for the Hopewell Baptist Church family life center, off Davidson-Concord Road. On Friday, the Gabriel Alegria Afro-Peruvian Sextet gives an afternoon master class and an evening concert at the college.

On the sports calendar, Davidson’s women’s basketball team is on the road tonight at against Samford, in Birmingham, Ala. The men’s team returns home Wednesday for a 7 p.m. game against Furman. And next Saturday, the college hosts its annual Hall of Fame induction and celebration, with ceremonies plus men’s and women’s home basketball games. On Sunday, Davidson alum and athlete Sterling Martin lectures at a Davidson Historical Society meeting about “The History of Sports at Davidson College.”

MONDAY, JAN. 19, Davidson College – Martin Luther King Jr. Day events at Davidson College: 9:30 a.m., Walk for Change, from Richardson Stadium to Chambers steps, for a reading of King’s “I Have a Dream” speech; 9:30-11:30 a.m., King Day for Kids at Alvarez College Union, with activities for kids in grades K-5; 11:30, King Day Community Convocation, with Dr. Freeman Hrabowski, president of University of Maryland-Baltimore County. Tuesday, Jan. 20, Inauguration Day events

  • 8:30 a.m., Davidson College Presbyterian Church, Lingle Chapel, Main Street and Concord Road – Inauguration Day Prayer Service. A 20-minute prayer service in support of the country’s elected leaders, the country, and the world. With the Rev. Lib McGregor Simmons of DCPC, the Rev. Jody Seymour of Davidson United Methodist Church, and the Rev. David Buck of St. Alban’s Episcopal Church.
  • 10 a.m., Inauguration ceremonies begin in Washington.
  • On WDAV-FM, 89.9, 11 a.m. WDAV joins National Public Radio’s live coverage of the Inauguration Ceremonies. Festivities from the west lawn of the United States Capitol include a new musical composition by acclaimed film composer John Williams commissioned specifically for the Obama Inauguration. Also, the Oath of Office will be taken by President-elect Barack H. Obama, administered by Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. At 5 p.m. – “Performance Today” reviews the Mr. Williams’ new piece, and talks with members of the quartet who premiered the work: Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, Gabriela Montero, and Anthony McGill. The 2-hour program also has music with “presidential connections,” including a performance by the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio, a great American ensemble formed for the 1981 inauguration of President Carter; and music from the private collection of Thomas Jefferson.

SATURDAY, JAN. 24, Davidson College Baker Sports Complex – 2008 Davidson Athletics Hall of Fame events. Induction ceremonies begin with a reception at 3:45 p.m., following the women’s basketball game against Appalachian State. That game begins at noon in Belk Arena. DAVIDSON DASH SENIOR SHUTTLE BUS – Mondays beginning Jan. 26, 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The Town of Davidson will begin service on a weekly senior citizens shuttle bus called Davidson Dash. The bus will visit downtown, South Main Street, Sadler Square and the Harris Teeter shopping center near Exit 30. Cost: $1 per roundtrip.
