A renovated building at Davidson College has won certification as an environmentally friendly structure under the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED program. Duke Dormitory, which was renovated last year and also houses the college’s Dean Rusk International Studies Program, is the first building at the college and in the town of Davidson to win LEED certification, according to college officials.
The certification looks at the building site, water efficiency, energy use, building materials, indoor environmental quality and innovation, according to the college.
Davidson College is seeking certification for two other buildings: Cunningham Theatre Center and the Gray Admission Building. President Tom Ross told people at a recent gathering to celebrate the Duke Dorm certification that all future campus renovations and building projects will be LEED certified.
The college is also drawing up plans to install solar panels on top of one of the main buildings.
