Seven Davidson College football players received All-Pioneer Football League honors this season, it was announced Wednesday. All selections were made by the league’s coaches, who were not permitted to vote for their own players. The Wildcats were led by first-team selection Will Nolte, an offensive lineman from Cincinnati, Ohio.

Nolte, who garnered all-league honorable mention honors in 2007, was the lone Wildcat on the first team after helping lead the offensive line and pave the way for the squad’s 1,246 rushing yards while only allowing 16 sacks on 384 pass attempts on the year.

Davidson had a pair of players make their way onto the second-team defensive squad, with defensive lineman Will Funderburg (Buford, Ga.) and linebacker Tyler Lemons (Belmont, N.C.) earning the accolade.

Funderburg, a senior who is making his third appearance on the All-PFL team after receiving first-team honors in 2005 and honorable mention accolades last season, led the Wildcats with 13 tackles for loss and registered 46 total stops and 2.5 sacks on the season.

Lemons was the team leader with 91 total tackles, second-most in the league. He recorded 38 solo stops, and 6.5 for loss, while also adding 2.5 sacks for a total of 17 yards.

Senior wide receiver Kirk Konert (Bolivar, N.Y.), who led the ‘Cats with 53 receptions for 692 yards and six touchdowns, was an honorable mention selection along with junior offensive lineman Mark Iafrate (Weston, Fla.), senior defensive back Matt Mikrut (Burke, Va.) and sophomore return specialist Justin Williams (Laurinburg, N.C.).

Konert finished third in the PFL?in receiving yards and fourth in receptions, while Mikrut ranked 11th in pass break-ups (8) and 14th in tackles by a defensive back (51). Williams was second in the conference in all-purpose yards, averaging 127.8 a contest.

Jacksonville, which claimed the PFL title and suffered its only league loss at the hands of Davidson, picked up Freshman of the Year (Josh McGregor) and Coach of the Year (Kerwin Bell) honors. San Diego wide receiver John Matthews was named the league’s Offensive Player of the Year, and Dayton defensive lineman Scott Vossler won the Defensive Player of the Year award.
