Chanukah is an eight-day Jewish holiday commemorating the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem. Each night during Chanukah, also called the Festival of Lights, Jewish people around the world light candles on the Menorah or Hanukiah. One more candle is lit each night until all eight (plus the shamash or helper candle) are illuminated. The holiday begins each year on the 25th day of Kislev, according to the Hebrew calendar. This year, the first night of Chanukah is December 22nd.
