Town public works director Doug Wright said Monday that repaving of Griffith Street is behind schedule, and he now hopes it can be finished by Christmas. In an email announcement, Mr. Wright said the construction contractor must pay a penalty for every day that paving and re-striping is delayed. See the text of his announcement below:
The $417,000 repaving project follows more than two years of work on and along on the street, which links the area off I-77 Exit 30 with Main Street. (Corrected: The dollar figure was incorrect in the original version of this story./David)
Charlotte Mecklenburg Utilities, which is paying the largest share of the repaving cost, dug up the street as part of a utility line replacement project. The N.C. Department of Transportation also is paying for a portion of the cost and the town is making up the difference, Mr. Wright told DavidsonNews.net this morning.
TEXT OF ANNOUNCEMENT
We are aware that the paving process on Griffith Street has created an inconvenience to motorists and we are working with the contractor to complete the project as soon as possible.
The contractor responsible for paving Griffith Street is behind schedule for the November 21 completion day and they will have to pay a penalty for every day they have delayed paving and striping. We expect to complete the project before Christmas, but require a week of sustained warm weather, which will impact the completion date.– Doug Wright

What’s “warm weather”? The average low in mid-December is 35 degrees. It’s mid-March before the average is above 40. Maybe it will be ready by Easter?
How do any roads get built/paved in colder climes? My vote is that the work isn’t completed until late March, at the earliest.
Perhaps the penalty dollars can go towards repaving some of our other streets in town…
