
C. Louise Nelson
C. Louise Nelson, the first woman appointed full professor at Davidson College, died Thursday. She was 90.
Dr. Nelson retired from Davidson in 1988 and was professor emerita of economics. A resident of The Pines at Davidson, she also was a longtime member of Davidson College Presbyterian Church, where she served as an elder.
The funeral will be Monday, Nov., 24, at 1:30 p.m. at Davidson College Presbyterian Church. A reception with her family will follow in the Congregation House. Raymer Funeral Home in Huntersville is in charge of arrangements. A full obituary follows …
Cora Louise Nelson
Dr. Nelson, 90, died Thursday, November 20, 2008 at her residence. She was born May 25, 1918, in Henderson, N.C. She served on the faculty of Davidson College from 1964 to 1988, being the first woman to be granted full professorship, and held that title professor of economics emerita.
She graduated with a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1964. Dr. Nelson had served on the Board of Directors at First Union Corp. She was a member of the Omicron Delta Epsilon International Honor Society and the American Association of University Women. She was an elder at Davidson College Presbyterian Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Matt and Vallie Nelson; and sisters, Esther Minturn and Vella Nelson. She is survived by her sisters, Edith Clark, Lois Weinberg, Margaret Nixon and Joyce Stanford; brother, Matt Nelson, Jr.; and 17 nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 24, 2008 at Davidson College Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends following the service in the Congregation House. A private burial will be held on their family plot in Littleton, N.C., at a later date.
