
Young
Poet and novelist Al Young will be the guest speaker at the next meeting of Charlotte Writers Club North on Thursday, Nov. 6, at 7 p.m. at So Alive Gallery, 108 S. Main St. It’s a return visit to town for Mr. Young, who was Davidson College’s McGee Professor of Writing in 2003. He’s also the Poet Laureate of California.
Mr. Young’s stop in Davidson will follow a lecture at Johnson C. Smith University on Wednesday, Nov. 5.
Mr. Young is well known as a novelist, poet, and as a writer of essays, memoirs, and anthologies. He has written widely about music, and he has created film scripts for Sidney Poitier, Bill Cosby, and Richard Pryor. His honors include Wallace Stegner, Guggenheim, Fulbright, National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships, two American Book Awards, two Pushcart Prizes, and two New York Times Notable Book of the Year citations.
In 2005 he was appointed as the Poet Laureate of California by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. He comes to the Charlotte Writers Club North through the good graces of Johnson C. Smith University and its Dean, Don Mager.
