Kittery Neale, senior captain of the Davidson College women's volleyball team, raced Davidson Elementary students as part of the Tiger on the Prowl kickoff event.
It wasn’t just kids running laps around the Davidson Elementary School fields last Thursday – members of the Davidson College women’s volleyball and men’s track teams also worked up a sweat. The college athletes were some of the “local heroes” recruited for the kick-off of the school’s annual Tigers on the Prowl program.
We have a report on that, along with news of an open house at Davidson Day, a flu shot clinic and free internet safety class at Bailey Middle, and a full calendar of upcoming events.
Tigers on the Prowl kicks off a new year of running
Davidson Elementary School kicked off its sixth year of the Tigers on the Prowl program Thursday, Oct. 2.
“We had an amazing day Thursday!” event coordinator Gennine Davis reported. She said about 1,000 students and staff participated, along with 260 parents and guest.
Tigers on the Prowl, launched by P.E. teacher Walter Rabb, involves students running laps in designated places on school grounds. Teachers record laps run during recess as part of the goal of completing a marathon (or 26.22 miles) over the course of a school year. Students earn prizes along the way, culminating in the coveted “Tigers on the Prowl” marathon-club t-shirt.
“Local Heroes” who joined in the kickoff event included Davidson Mayor John Woods, Davidson Commissioner Laurie Venzon, Davidson College Track & Field Coach Gary Andrew, Volleyball Coach Tim Cowie, members of both the Wildcat track and volleyball teams, and officers from the Davidson Police Department.
