Six runners from Summit Coffee’s Team Summit are raising money this weekend by taking turns running legs in the Blue Ridge Relay, a 208-mile relay race from Grayson County, in western Virginia, to Asheville. The Summit runners are hoping to defend their 2007 Ultra Division title, which they won in a course record 27 hours, 33 minutes, 42 seconds.

The team includes Summit owner Tim Helfrich, Brian Helfrich, Dan Helfrich, Stuart Frye, Chris Horvat and Chris Bryan. They began running Friday afternoon and should finish up around midday Saturday.

Team Summit is seeking financial pledges for each mile of the race as it raises money for the United Way of Central Carolinas. If you’d like to help out with a tax-deductible gift, stop by and pick up a form at Summit Coffee, 128 S. Main St.

The results are in: Team Summit finished eighth overall out of 78 teams and grabbed second place in the ultra division, for six-man teams, in the 2008 Blue Ridge Relay.

Summit’s team ran just under 27 hours (26:54:05) for the 208-mile race, with the six runners alternating legs. That averaged about 7:30 a mile for the distance.
