Rob Thomas, a Los Angeles director who thinks there might be a TV sitcom in the story of the Davidson “Bikini Team,” will be in town next week to shoot a short video that will help him shop the idea around Hollywood. Mr. Thomas will be in Davidson for a series of events, including a Town Hall ceremony Tuesday, Aug. 5, at 6 p.m. and video shoot at The Swimming Hole on Wednesday.
Members of the team hope supporters will turn out at both events, and there’s a chance some could be interviewed for the video.
Mr. Thomas has taken an option on the 2006 book “Bikini Is a State of Mind,” by the four 50-something members of the bikini team: Cynthia Lewis, Nancy Gardner, Lina Soares and Ann Haley. They describe their book as “part group diary, part poolside caricature, part lifestyle guide” and as a manifesto for women of their age group.
The video will be used to market a possible TV series to producers. “This is a documentary that will demonstrate not only the concept itself, but also enthusiasm for it among various audiences,” Ms. Lewis, an English professor at Davidson College, said.
Here are the public events this week, according to Ms. Lewis:
Tuesday, August 5, 6 p.m., Davidson Town Hall – a reception to greet Rob Thomas where Mayor John Woods will read a proclamation concerning the Davidson Bikini Team and authors of “Bikini Is a State of Mind.” Because Thomas wants to show enthusiasm among the crowd on the order of the Today Show, anyone bringing a banner or a sign to cheer on the Bikini Team and Rob Thomas will be filmed. The person with the best banner or sign will be interviewed for the documentary. Costumes are also welcomed, even encouraged!
Wednesday, August 6, 6:30 p.m., The Swimming Hole, Lorimer Road – a gathering at the pool to meet Rob, learn about the project, and, for those who show in bikinis, a chance to be in the film.
