Hopewell Baptist Church is proposing to build a new family life center on its property east of town, at 18841 Davidson-Concord Road. The town will host a two-day public planning workshop for the project Aug. 6-7 in the church fellowship hall.
Founded in 1879, Hopewell Baptist owns about 33 acres on four parcels at Davidson-Concord and Barnhardt roads. The property currently encompasses the 1949 church sanctuary, the fellowship hall built in 1957 and a parsonage build in 1966-67.
Hopewell Baptist has hired architecture firm McLeod Associates to design the new building.

Planning for the project comes after the July 10 expiration of the town’s 1-year ban on new development in the N.C. 73 / Davidson-Concord Road area. It also comes on the heels of a recent study by Davidson, Cornelius, and Huntersville to help guide future development in the area.
The N.C. 73 area plan that came out of the study envisions a mix of uses on and near the Hopewell Church property.
That’s likely to come up at the Aug. 6-7 workshop, though the meeting will focus primarily on the church’s master plan for the new family life center, Davidson planner Lauren Blackburn said Wednesday.
“It’s just the church project,” Ms. Blackburn said. “The goal for this master plan is to help them site where additional buildings can be placed for church uses.”
Ms. Blackburn added that the church has “expressed some interest in finding ways their facilities can be used as a community resource,” an idea that also was raised in the N.C. 73 plan.
Citizens are invited to attend the meeting, where they will have a chance to hear more about the church’s plans and offer feedback.
