Friends of local bicyclist and triathlete Skip Sullivan are organizing a 30-mile ride from downtown Davidson on Sunday morning to raise donations for Livestrong, the Lance Armstrong Foundation. The hastily arranged event is also to show support for Mr. Sullivan, who was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer.
Neighbor Jason Huff is organizing the ride, in part at Mr. Sullivan’s request. “He was diagnosed 3 weeks ago and he’s going in for major surgery next week. … He’s doing well,” Mr. Huff said. Mr. Sullivan will join the ride Sunday.
Mr. Sullivan is the husband of Beth Knox Sullivan. In addition to being an athlete himself, he’s a longtime fan of Mr. Armstrong. He has asked participants and friends to consider a donation to Livestrong. (Details below)
He and his wife had a chance a few years ago to travel to France for the Tour de France bicycle race, where they cheered for Mr. Armstrong. The famed cyclist was diagnosed with testicular cancer and during his treatment started the foundation to help others.
“Now Skip joins Lance in a more important way, not just as a cycling fan, but as a fellow cancer fighter,” Jane Elizabeth Huff, wife of Jason Huff, said in an email promoting the ride.
Cool Breeze Cyclery in Mooresville is helping to coordinate the ride. It will leave Sunday at 9 a.m., starting and end ending at Summit Coffee, 128 S. Main St.
