Workers using a post-hole digger cut a gas line in the Lake Davidson Park neighborhood around midday Wednesday, forcing residents to leave their homes temporarily. Police also halted car traffic in the area until firefighters and gas company officials had the leak under control by about 12:30 p.m. The incident happened outside a townhouse at 109 Lake Davidson Park.

Police were on the scene stopping traffic into the neighborhood, which is in west Davidson off Armour Street. Residents expressed concern about the leak, recalling an incident earlier this month in which a child died in a gas explosion at a northeast Charlotte home.

The homeowner, Greg Sheppard, said workers accidentally sliced into the gas line while using a post-hole digger.

A year ago, a gas leak and fire destroyed a single-family home on nearby Delburg Street in west Davidson. In that incident, landscapers also cut a gas line by accident.
