‘Little Women’ debut, exhibit opening, live music

Hanging around Davidson this weekend? We’ve got plenty of ideas for things to do, beginning with opening performances of Davidson Community Players’ “Little Women, the Musical” weekend calendar in Davidson College’s Duke Family Performance Hall. Also, live music at Summit Coffee tonight through Saturday, a Shabbat celebration Friday with Lake Norman Jewish Congregation, and an exhibit opening for the group show “Pathways: The Shoe” at Creative Art Exchange. Meanwhile, don’t forget about the on-site planning workshop this afternoon (Thursday) near the Mayes property, off Davidson-Concord Road, and Saturday’s Davidson Farmer’s Market, downtown. THURSDAY, JUNE 19, 7 p.m., Ada Jenkins Center, 212 Gamble St. – North Mecklenburg Mayors’ “Resources for Residents” community education series continues with a session on “Keeping Your Home Safe When You Are Away” Free. (Also June 26 at Cornelius Town Hall.

FRIDAY, JUNE 20, 1-5 p.m., Town Hall, 216 S. Main St. – Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) hosts a design workshop with planners, property owners and other stakeholders to begin working on Davidson’s train station area master plan. Details: Davidson planning department, 704-892-7592.

FRIDAY, JUNE 20, 7 p.m., Fair View United Methodist Church, Mooresville – Lake Norman Jewish Congregation Shabbat (sabbath) celebration, with friendship, songs, storytelling and prayer, guided by Rabbi Michael Shields. SATURDAY, JUNE 21, 8 a.m. to noon, next to Town Hall, 216 S. Main St. – weekly Davidson Farmers Market, with fresh produce, meats, flowers and other items from local farmers and vendors. SATURDAY, JUNE 21, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, 301 Caldwell Lane – Super Saturday, in which St. Alban’s becomes a drive-through donation point for clothing, toys, baby items, appliances and other household items, The parking lot will be set up in a drive thru fashion so you can drop off items that you no longer need. Donated items will be distributed through Lydia’s Loft (clothing) and Butterfly Bin (household items) to families, who are referred by Ada Jenkins Center and Crisis Assistance. Baby items will go to Solomon House in Huntersville, while some items will go to the Habitat Restore. Tax donation receipts available. Volunteers needed. SATURDAY, JUNE 21, 2-4 p.m., Creative Art Exchange, 19725 Oak St., behind the police station, Cornelius – Ceramic artist Alyssa Wood of Davidson will offer a “Handbuilding Tiles Workshop.” Ms. Wood is a program consultant to Creative Art Exchange and a member of Alternate Image, the group of artists featured in the current exhibit “Pathways: The Shoe” (see listing below). Workshop students will explore the versatility of slab construction-tiles, boxes, sculptures-almost anything you can imagine can be made from slabs of clay. This workshop is for all skill levels. Mrs. Roberts, now 90 years old, has worked as a book and fashion illustrator, sketched wounded veterans for the USO and attended both the National Academy and Arts Students League in New York City.
