Planning workshops, reading, and ‘Little Women’

This week’s community calendar in and around Davidson remains a busy one, with
a full slate of public meetings, arts events and entertainment. Local author Ann Wicker is at Main Street books Tuesday for a reading, town planners hold important workshops on Monday and Thursday, and the Lake Norman Jewish Congregation plans a shabbat celebration Friday. And don’t forget to get your tickets for Davidson Community Players’ “Little Women, the Musical,” which opens Thursday.
WEEK OF JUNE 16-22
MONDAY, JUNE 16, 7 p.m., Town Hall, 216 S. Main St. – Public workshop to review a
draft of the proposed Davidson Bicycle Transportation Plan. This will be the final public workshop before the Town Board votes on the plan. For more information, contact Davidson planner Lauren Blackburn, lblackburn@ci.davidson.nc.us.
TUESDAY, JUNE 17, 7 p.m., Main Street Books, 126 S. Main St. – Main Street Readers reading and book signing with Ann Wicker, editor of “Making Notes: Music of the Carolinas.” Ms. Wicker is a longtime journalist, Davidson College graduate and area native. Also attending will be contributors Ed Southern and Kevin Winchester. Mr. Southern and Ms. Wicker will read from the book and Mr. Winchester play a couple of songs. Details: 704-892-6841.
WEDNESDAY, JUNE 20 – Summer Walking Wednesday. The Davidson Walks committee encourages parents and kids to continue their weekly walking by walking and biking around town this summer. More info on the town website.
THURSDAY, JUNE 19, 7 p.m., Ada Jenkins Center, 212 Gamble St. – North Mecklenburg Mayors’ “Resources for Residents” community education series continues with a session on “Keeping Your Home Safe When You Are Away” Free. (Also June 26 at Cornelius Town Hall.

FRIDAY, JUNE 20, 1-5 p.m., Town Hall, 216 S. Main St. – Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) hosts a design workshop with planners, property owners and other stakeholders to begin working on Davidson’s train station area master plan. Details: Davidson planning department, 704-892-7592.
FRIDAY, JUNE 20, 7 p.m., Fair View United Methodist Church, Mooresville – Lake Norman Jewish Congregation Shabbat (sabbath) celebration, with friendship, songs, storytelling and prayer, guided by Rabbi Michael Shields. Stonewall St., Charlotte – “The Scene,” by Theresa Rebeck, directed by Davidson College theater professor Ann Marie Costa and starring Davidson College actress Kelsey Formost. “The Scene” is a comedy about dating, fame, fulfillment and obsession with pop culture. THROUGH JUNE 30, Town Hall rotunda gallery, 216 S. Main St. – “June Roberts: A Collection of Portraits & Landscapes,” with work by Davidson artist June Roberts. Mrs. Roberts, now 90 years old, has worked as a book and fashion illustrator, sketched wounded veterans for the USO and attended both the National Academy and Arts Students League in New York City. THROUGH JULY 12, Creative Art Exchange, 19725 Oak St., behind the police station, Cornelius – “Pathways: The Shoe,” featuring work by the Alternative Image Group, a collective with artists from a variety of disciplines. Included are two North Carolina artists: Alyssa Wood of Davidson and Barbara Chadwick-Bland, of Charlotte.
