Davidson College is a hotbed of talent, but last week it came to our attention just how much talent is being nurtured within the local ivied halls of learning. Meet rising senior Kelsey Formost (photo), who is “making the scene” this month as the lead in the dark comedy “The Scene” at Actor’s Theatre in Charlotte. The play also has another Davidson connection: the director is Davidson theater professor Ann Marie Costa.
“The Scene” is a comedy about dating, fame, fulfillment and obsession with pop culture. It runs through June 28 at Actor’s Theater of Charlotte, 650 E. Stonewall St. in Charlotte.
Ms. Formost was born and raised in San Diego, Calif., the daughter of Ray and Karen Formost. She came cross country to enter Davidson College as a freshman, where she received a prestigious Belk Scholarship in the Class of 2009.
“Receiving the scholarship instilled me with such an incredible sense of gratitude for my education, and encouraged me more that I thought possible to put myself on the line and take advantage of every opportunity presented to me during my time at Davidson and beyond,” she said.
Opportunities for Kelsey have included participating in the actor training program, Springboard NYC, a summer in Paris with the New York Film Academy’s Actor Training program, and experience onstage during a junior year semester in Florence, Italy.
LANDING A LEAD ROLE
This spring she successfully auditioned for the role of “Clea” in this month’s production of Theresa Rebeck’s “The Scene” at Actor’s Theater of Charlotte.
“The Scene,” is Actor’s Theater’s final production of the 2007-2008 season. Actors Dave Blamy, Brian Robinson and Allison Lamb join Kelsey on stage in this play, which touches on our obsession with celebrity, money and sex – basically anything but our hearts and souls. (Needless to say, subject matter is for mature audiences only.)
Ms. Formost, as Clea, plays a manipulative, shrewd vixen who wreaks havoc on a marriage and gives a knock out performance on stage.
