Mother’s Day concert, animal adoption fair

Shhh! Keep your voice down if you have to walk through the Davidson College campus this weekend as the exam period begins Friday morning. weekend-bug.jpg That means a quiet weekend and no home sports for the Wildcats. However, the rest of us can enjoy the new Farmer’s Market Saturday, live music at Summit Coffee weekend evenings, a major animal adoption fair in Cornelius and an arts jam at Cannon School. If the weather cooperates, Sunday will feature Band of Oz at the first Concert on the Green for 2008.

Weekend of May 8-11

Live folk/Americana music this weekend at Summit Coffee includes Matt Walsh Thursday, Jake Troth Friday and Jake Melnyk Saturday. Bands play on the back patio (or upstairs in the case of rain) from 8-11 p.m. The free event will include

Cannon School, which is located in Concord and has a large Davidson cohort, will hold its annual Arts Jam Friday, 6-8:30 p.m. The free event will include musical entertainment by the John Alexander Quartet and Cannon’s Upper School Jazz Band, plus a hands-on recycled art activity led by The Scrap Exchange. A fireworks display will close out the event beginning at about 8:30 p.m. Hot dogs, ice cream and other refreshments will be availabel for sale. The private k-12 prep school is located on Poplar Tent Road near the Cabarrus/Mecklenburg county line.

Davidson’s brand new Farmers Market continues Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon, with produce and other goods by area farmers and vendors. This weekend, the market will have a chef demonstration at 10 a.m. by Greg Guthrie of Green Cuisine in Charlotte. Shoppers will be serenaded by Davidson Express. Last weekend’s official opening featured 17 vendors. The market is located next to Town Hall. Details: www.davidsonfarmersmarket.org

Saturday will feature the Best Friends Super Adoption Pet Fair and humane education event sponsored by Best Friends Animal Society, with Cornelius Parks & Recreation and Friends for Life LKN. The fair will be held at Bailey Road Park in Cornelius and run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. (Registration is at 9 a.m. for the ‘Strut Your Mutt’ march.) Hundreds of pets will be available for adoption, along with vendors, information booths, and fund-raising for the planned North Mecklenburg Animal Shelter in Cornelius. Sunday marks the Pentecost festival (or the 50th day after Easter) in the Christian liturgical calendar, so expect to see church goers dressed in red. It’s also Mother’s Day, so don’t forget that card and flowers for mom.

Downtown Davidson Inc. will debut Concerts on the Green Sunday, 6-8 p.m. with Band of Oz, an eight-member beach/variety group based in Greensboro. Bring your linen napkins and best bouquet vase as the evening will feature a contest for most beautiful picnic, in honor of Mother’s Day. Free.

  • FRIDAY, MAY 16, 9 a.m. to noon – Lake Norman Art League will sponsor a 3-D glass sculpting class, to be held at the Art Glass Works Studio, 20850 Catawba Avenue in Cornelius. Supplies will be furnished and no experience is necessary. Participants will be able to collect their fired sculpture Sunday afternoon. Cost is $40 for art league members, $50 for non members.   • FRIDAY, MAY 16, 9-10:30 p.m., Alvarez College Union – The Davidson College Jazz Ensemble will perform a concert in honor of graduating seniors.
  • SATURDAY, MAY 17, 8:30 a.m., Fisher Farm Park, off Shearers Road – Ready, Set, Go Green! 5K trail run and fun run, organized by students from Woodlawn School, to raise money for the Davidson Lands Conservancy’s land acquisition fund. See our April 2 news item about the event.
  • SUNDAY, MAY 18, 9:50 a.m., Commencement for the Davidson College Class of 2008.
