Thursday, May 1, is Holocaust Remembrance Day, and Beth Shalom of Lake Norman is planning a candle-lighting ceremony at 7 p.m. on the Village Green, at Main Street and Concord Road. Survivors will deliver first-hand accounts and student anti-genocide activists will speak as well.
Here’s the planned program, as provided by Sally Phillips, president of Beth Shalom:
- Welcome from Congregation Beth Shalom
- First-hand accounts by survivor Henry Hirschmann and Manfred Katz, a liberator who arrived at Dachau just after it was liberated.
- Student activists from “STAND” (an umbrella organization of more than 600 high school and college chapters dedicated to putting an end to genocide.)
- Candle lighting
- Prayer
- Moment of silence
- Shofar blowing
