It’s reunion weekend for alums at Davidson College, which means golf tournaments and other activities for former Wildcats.
Meanwhile, students at Davidson IB will be holding a benefit “Community Walk for Darfur” Saturday, the library will hold a workshop on prom makeup, a musician from Belfast will be singing Irish songs, kites will be flying at Bailey Road Park and college students will be displaying their artistic and vocal talents as the school year winds to a close. EVENTS –
Former South Carolina Governor Jim Hodges will hold an “early voting” rally for Democrat candidate Barack Obama Thursday, starting at 3:30 p.m. at Davidson College’s Hance Auditorium, in the top floor of the Chambers Building. Early voting opens Monday and runs through Saturday, May 3. The primary vote for North Carolina will be Tuesday, May 6.
The Davidson Public Library will host a workship title, “Project Prom: Makeup by Sheetal,” Thursday from 7-8:30 p.m. Call 704-892-8557 to register or for more information.
The Davidson College Jazz Ensemble will perform a free jazz concert Thursday, starting at 7:30 p.m. in the college union’s 900 room. Adam Snow will lead the ensemble in a show that will include solos and a variety of tunes.
The annual college student art exhibition will open with a reception Thursday from 7-9 p.m. in the Belk Viual Arts Center. Artwork by Davidson students will be on display from April 25-May 7. Galleries are open for viewing at no charge from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and from noon to 4 p.m. weekends.

Capriol Farm, located at 20419 Shearer Road, will host a house concert of Traditional Irish music Friday, starting at 7:30 p.m. The concert and open session will feature Noel Lenaghan, a singer, songwriter, mandolinist, guitarist, and flutist from Belfast, Northern Ireland. The Generals, Davidson College’s all-male a capella group, will hold their spring concert and CD-release paty Friday, starting at 7:30 p.m. in the Duke Family Performance Hall. The concert comes as the group releases “A General Consensus.” Tickets $7 for college faculty and staff, $10 for general public, available at the door.

As the semester winds down, it’s time for Davidson College senior music majors to give their final recitals. We’ve asked around and we’re told that violinist Mejin’s Leechor‘s recital Saturday at noon may be one of the most worth checking out. She’ll play selections from Mozart, Copland, and Franck, at Tyler-Tallman Hall in the Sloan Music Center. Admission is free. For details, call 704-894-2848.
Davidson Parks will host the final volunteer workday at Fisher Farm Park, Sunday from 8 a.m. – 11 a.m. Volunteers will help clear walking and hiking trails, led by an experienced trail builder. The Cornelius Parks Department will host its sixth-annual kite flying event Sunday, 2-4 p.m. at the Bailey Road Park. Bring a kite along and plan to enjoy music and high-flying fun.
Michael Bertrand, a history professor at Tennesse State, will deliver the annual Kelley Lecture Sunday at 3:30 p.m. in the union’s 900 room. The lecture is titled, “This Ain’t No Vaudeville! Popular Music , the Civil Rights Struggle and the 1956 Assault of Nat King Cole.”
The Concerts on the Green 2008 season begins Sunday on the Village Green, 6-8 p.m., with the Davidson College Symphony and Jazz Ensemble. Sponsored by DavidsonNews.net!
Also, at 5 p.m. Sunday, Davidson Presbyterian Church on Depot Street will have a choir festival in the church sanctuary, featuring all of its choirs.
SPORTS –
Sports at Davidson College this weekend features the women’s lacrosse team (10-5), which will conclude its 2008 season by hosting Howard at 1 p.m. Saturday. Meanwhile, the Davidson Athletic Foundation will host the 14th annual Tom Scott Golf Tournament at the Birkdale Golf Club in Huntersville.
