MAY REC DEPARTMENT ACTIVITIES
Special Event: Town Day – Annual spring Town Day festival fills the Village Green with carnival games, foods, arts, vendors and entertainment for the whole family. Other children’s activities will include inflatables, a sand box and duck pond. The flex flyer, one of the most popular forms of entertainment from last year, will return. Vendors who wish to participate may register by completing a registration form available at the recreation office.

Reynolda House & Gardens/ SECCA Gallery – A day for visiting the contemporary art museum. Eat lunch, walk through the gardens, and tour the home.

Major League Baseball Tour – A 5-day/4-night tour on a 54 passenger motor coach to take in a game between the New York Mets and Washington Nationals in the new stadium in Washington, D.C. Next will be New York City, for a guided tour of the city and then a game at “the House that Ruth built,” Yankee Stadium, during its last season of use by the host New York Yankees as they take on the Kansas City Royals. On to Boston, MA for another guided tour of the city before visiting legendary Fenway Park to watch the World Champion Boston Red Sox take on the Toronto Blue Jays. The last stop on the tour will be in Cooperstown, NY to visit the Baseball Hall of Fame, before heading south back to North Carolina. Registration and payment deadline is June 15, 2008.

Martial Arts – 50+ Tai Chi – Improve balance to minimize the risk of falling, while developing the flexibility to reach those hard to reach places. Good leg strength makes it easier to get up from a sitting position, and strong lungs mean you can walk without getting winded. While each of these aspects of fitness can be gained though other activities, Tai Chi is particularly will suited for older individuals as it is a non-impact exercise.

Family Activities
Contradance – Davidson Parks and Recreation and Contradance Carolina offer dance classes for the whole family. Contra Dance features live music and is a welcoming high energy, non-competitive dance form. No partner or experience needed. Adult partner required for minor participants. Mountain Bike Clinic – Advanced Bicycle Skills Clinics will be hosted by Piedmont Area Singletrack Alliance (PASA) and are open to riders of all skill levels. Some of the skills covered will include bicycle trackstanding, bunny hopping, jumping and riding elevated structures. Spotters are provided. Required: Mountain Bike (flat pedals preferred, not clip-ins), a helmet and a parent, if the rider is under the age of 18. Knee/shin pads are recommended.

Davidson Senior Scholars – The Davidson Senior Scholars has recently formed to provide programs that stimulate continual intellectual and cultural growth. The general format of the meetings is that of lecture followed by question and answer. The speakers are generally Davidson college professors and physicians. Programs are free. Monthly meetings take place the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month. Location is the Town of Parks and Recreation office, located at 416 Armour Street.
Understanding Human Genetic Disorders – Speaker: Karen Hales, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Biology at Davidson College – Dr. Hales will give a primer on normal gene function, and explain how abnormal gene function leads to particular genetic disorders. She will describe how gene therapy may be used as treatment in some limited cases. Genetic conditions that may be used as examples include Alzheimers, sickle cell anemia, deafness, and dwarfism.

True Me Workshop – Girls – Your daughter receives 3,000 media messages every day! She probably doesn’t have the skills to sort through the noise and only consider those messages that will help her develop and maintain a healthy self-esteem and body image? This workshop will guide young ladies through the analysis of media messages featured in magazines, television, music, and the Internet; teaches young ladies how to cultivate and maintain a healthy self-esteem, body image, and social presence; empowers young ladies to successfully rise above the confusion created by the media and become authentically beautiful intellectually, emotionally, and socially; and provides young ladies with a safe and fun forum where they can develop the knowledge, skills, and beliefs required to become purpose-filled, analytical, and beautiful thinker.

Beginner Level Introduction to Water Safety – This swimming program is designed for children who have familiarity with water but do not swim independently. The goal is to encourage and foster independence in the water. Parent involvement is required in the pool.

Hug a Pug! – This therapeutic pet program is designed to partner up a dog with children with special needs. Our partner is Yoshi, a pug owned by Kris Batchelor and her family. Kris and Yoshi are registered and trained by the Delta Society, an international, non-profit organization that unites people with disabilities with professionally trained animals to help improve their health. This program is sure to bring a smile and lots of giggles.
