Students at Davidson College plan to gather Wednesday evening for a peace vigil to mark the fifth anniversary of the Iraq war (March 19). The student group “Just Peace” is sponsoring the event together with the local Quaker society, the Davidson Friends Meeting. The vigil is scheduled for 7 – 7:45 p.m. at the flagpole located just north of the Chambers Building on the college campus. Participants are asked to bring old candles to use during the event, which will feature solemn reflection and words of “hope for the future.”
Also in the area, Ramah Presbyterian Church (located off of Rt. 73 in Huntersville) is having a peace vigil Wednesday, from 5 p.m. – midnight in the church sanctuary. This will be a time for quiet reflection, although there will also be a worship service from 7-8 p.m.

It is ironic that an advertisement for John McCain pops up right underneath this story about the planned peace vigil. It juxtaposes the choice we need to make as Americans. I believe that the Quakers and those organizing this vigil are so right in their appeal for peace, instead of a never-ending, needless war.
