Weekend of music and workshops

This weekend features a forum on open space in Davidson, workshops on stress relief and handlweekend-bug.jpging change, an open house with a local potter, a free concert at the college and pianists performing at St. Alban’s.  Meanwhile, in sports, home games for the ‘Cats include a baseball series and a women’s basketball game.

EVENTS –

Landscape planner, author and conversation planning advocate Randall Arendt will be in Davidson Thursday evening to offer comments on the town’s open space efforts and the Davidson-Concord Road/N.C. 73 area planning process. “An Evening with Randall Arendt” will be held at the fellowship hall for Davidson United Methodist Church starting at 7 p.m.  Also, planning directors from area towns, property owners and other participants will discuss the N.C. 73 area plan. Free. Details on the town website.

Davidson Parks & Rec will host a stress workshop with Shannon Carney Thursday, 7-8:30 p.m. at the department offices, 416 Armour Street. Explore techniques that will help you better manage stress and realize more peace, balance and joy. Hands-on exercises to help you improve your overall happiness. Summit Coffee will have live music this weekend on the upstairs stage, featuring a CD release party for Miles Apart Thursday and Volatile Baby Friday. Bands play from 8-11 p.m.

The Davidson College Symphony and Concert Choir perform Thursday, starting at 7:30 p.m., with winners of the Concerto Competition.  The performance will feature soloists Krysta Cihi on the clarenet, Catherine Clodfelter on the harp and Mejin Leechor on the violin.  The concert is free and open to the public and will be held in the Duke Family Performance Hall.

New Davidson resident and life-coach Amy Doughten will lead a two-session workshop on change starting Saturday at 9 a.m. -noon at the Davidson Public Library.  The workshops are appropriate for people in transition, including those who might be moving, starting/ending school or a relationship, starting/losing a job or dealing with illness or loss.  Sessions will focus on how to set realistic objectives and create strategies to overcome resistance.  The second session will follow on March 8.  To reserve a spot, contact Ms. Doughten at adoughten@gmail.com or 336-499-2508.  The cost for the workshop is $75.

bl_place-setting.jpgSeaweed Designs Art Boutique will host a session with potter Cathy Walling at the gallery’s First Saturday Meet Our Artist event.  Visitors will be able to view and purchase work by Ms. Walling, a Lake Norman artist and potter with a studio in Sherrills Ford.  (The photo at right features a place setting from Ms. Wallings’ Blue Lace series.)  The event will run from 4-7 p.m.  Seaweed is located in the Davidson Arts District on South Main Street (by Fuel Pizza).

Next up in the St. Alban’s concert series will be the Manhattan Piano Trio, performing Sunday, 3 p.m. at the church. Music of Ravel, Shostakovich, Haydn, Piazzolla, and more. Trio members are pianist Milana Strezeva, violinist Dmitry Lukin and cellist Dmitry Kouzov. Refreshments will be served after the concert.  Tickets $15 general admission, $10 students and seniors (65+). Children under 10 free. Advance purchase recommended. Details: 704-941-0650.

SPORTS –

Wildcat sports this weekend features a three game series for the baseball team and a women’s basketball game.  In baseball, Davidson College will host Niagara for a double-header Saturday starting at 1 p.m. at Wilson Field, and then meet again Sunday at noon.  The women’s basketball team will play Southern Conference rival College of Charleston Saturday at noon.

  • WEDNESDAY, MARCH 5 – The town’s “Walk to School Wednesday” for the month of March.
  • SATURDAY, MARCH 8, 7 a.m. – 11 a.m., Huntersville First Baptist Church – The Ada Jenkins Center of Davidson will host its annual pancake breakfast fundraiser at First Baptist, located at 121 North Old Statesville Drive.  Tickets are $7 for adults and $4 for children and can be purchased at the door or by calling 704-896-0471.
  • SATURDAY, MARCH 8 – Open house at Davidson Day School, starting at 10 a.m. for parents of students in grades pre-K through 12.  No reservations are required and refreshments will be served.  Visitors can tour the new facility on Jetton Street and meet with teachers.
  • SUNDAY, MARCH 9, 8-11 a.m., Fisher Farm Park, off Shearers Road – Volunteer work session to clear walking and hiking trails at the town-owned park. Experienced trail builders will lead groups. Meet in the parking lot and bring your own work gloves and lunch. Suggested for volunteers at least high school age.  Work days continue March 15 and 30, April 4, 13, 20 and 27.
  • MARCH 11, 7 p.mDerek Walcott. Davidson College Duke Family Performance Hall – 2008 Reynolds Lecture by poet Derek Walcott (pictured), the 1992 Nobel Laureate in literature. Free, but tickets required.
  • MARCH 15, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., Bradford Store – Easter Carnival featuring a petting zoo, photos with live bunnies and an Easter Egg Hunt (bring your own basket – hunt starts at 11:30 a.m.) at the Bradford Store, located at 15915 Davidson-Concord Road (Hwy. 73).
  • MARCH 16, 2-4 p.m., North Mecklenburg Park – Annual Eggstravaganza, hosted by the parks and recreation departments of Davidson, Cornelius and Huntersville.  Free for ages 10 and under, featuring egg hunts, inflatables, face painting and more.
  • APRIL 12, 8 a.m. to noon, Village Green, Downtown Davidson – Community Rummage Sale. Details in our Feb. 9 news item.
