There will be a lot of music playing around town this weekend – with live bands at
Summit, dueling pianos at Masterworks, free concerts at the college, and contra dancing at the IB Middle School. For the more serious minded, consider a homegrown documentary on politics and religion Thursday night. For the less serious, consider the casino night fund-raiser for North Meck Soccer. For the youngsters, there’s a free performance of Cinderella silliness at the library. For hoopsters, there’s a men’s basketball game Saturday. Read all about it below.

EVENTS
Davidson College graduates John Marks and Craig Detweiler (both Class of 1985) premiere their film “Purple State of Mind” at 8 p.m. Thursday in the Hance Auditorium of Chambers. The event is free. Summit Coffee will have live music this weekend on the upstairs stage, featuring The Pocket (Billy Jones, Tim Helfrich and Mason Bissett) Thursday and Allan Kapplon & the Non-Prophets Saturday. Bands play from 8-11 p.m.
Pianist Cynthia Lawing will hold a free concert Thursday, starting at 7:30 p.m. at the Tyler-Tallman Hall in the college’s Sloan Music Center. For this faculty recital, Dr. Lawing will be playing works about water composed by Ravel, Debussy, Liszt and MacDowell.
Musicologist Daniel Goldmark of Case Western Reserve University will lecture Friday, starting at 4 p.m., on “Hollywood’s Singing, Cartoons, and the Persistence of Tin Pan Alley.” Dr. Goldmark is the author of “Tunes for ‘Toons,” a book about music during the heyday of Hollywood cartoons. The free lecture will be held in the college’s Sloan Music Center.
Dave Uibel, founder of the Masterworks School of the Arts in Davidson, will be joined by members of his faculty at a “Dueling Pianos” concert Friday at the school’s offices in Moorseville (111 Kilson Road), with seatings at 6:30 and 8 p.m. Mr. Uibel and his staff will present “an evening of romantic music from Bach to Brickman on one, two and four pianos.” Tickets are $13 per person, which includes coffee and a dessert. Contra Dance Carolina will host an evening of high-energy dancing Friday at the Davidson IB Middle School, 7:15 – 10:30 p.m. The scheduled band is “Hot Flash” and the caller will be Hank Morris. Cost is $7.
Children’s Theatre of Charlotte is teaming with the Davidson Public Library to perform “Cinderella Sillies,” starting at 2 p.m. The free program, which offers a new twist to an old fairy tale, is appropriate for all ages. Families are encouraged to attend together.
The North Meck Soccer Club will hold its annual Casino Night and Silent Auction Saturday, starting at 6 p.m., at Raceworld in Cornelius. Registration closes at 7:15 p.m. Dinner and drinks will be served and games for the evening will include craps, money wheel, black jack, roulette and Texas hold ‘em. Tickets are $100 in advance, which includes a $25 cash voucher for the game tables or bingo. Tickets at the door will cost $125.
Members of the Davidson College faculty will perform a free chamber music recital Saturday, starting at 7:30 p.m. at Tyler-Tallman Hall. The concert will feature music by Kodaly, Brahms and Davidson composer Mary Armistead-Jones, with pianist Ruskin Cooper, cellist Mark Tanner and violinist Janna Lower.
SPORTS
Sports at Davidson College this weekend features the women’s tennis team in a double header against Wingate at 10 a.m. and then Queens at 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Then at 3 p.m. Saturday, the men’s basketball team will take to the court, facing the College of Charleston in the annual Blackout Belk Arena game. (Fans are encouraged to wear black.) Can the ‘Cats hold onto their perfect record in the Southern Conference? We’re guessing yes!
