IB Middle gets new assistant principal
Monday morning was not just the start of a new week for Mr. Marshall Gore, Jr. – it marked the first day of his new assignment as the assistant principal at Davidson IB Middle School.
“I’m still learning the schedule,” he told DavidsonNews.net Tuesday morning. But he added that he is impressed with what he has seen so far. “This place exemplifies what public education should be about.”
Mr. Gore spent the past four years at Nations Ford Elementary School in Charlotte and before that, 10 years teaching at West Rowan Middle School, in the Rowan-Salisbury school district. He believes “education is not a race, it is a journey.” He has a master’s degree in school administration/curriculum and instruction from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
Bring on the Bard
The team from the Royal Shakespeare Co. at Davidson College this winter may be focused on developing a new play, but that doesn’t mean they haven’t had any time to hang out with local school kids.
In fact, the RSC folks have been holding voice and movement workshops and other activities with a number of area school groups. At Davidson Elementary, the RSC is helping fifth graders who are studying and performing “A Midsummer’s Nights Dream.” At Bailey Middle, students have been asked to memorize a sonnet and a monologue and are working with voice coach George Richmond-Scott and movement coach Lucy Cullingford. Students at Davidson IB Middle are getting some tips for an upcoming Shakespeare competition. Meanwhile, the Ada Jenkins after school program has been able to play voice and movement games with the Bard’s best. The RSC is also working with the North County Regional Library‘s teen actors workshop. The RSC residency will conclude Feb. 17. Walking Wednesday February results
Feb. 6 was the latest “Walk to School” day for Davidson Elementary. DavidsonWalks coordinator Sara-Lynne Levine reported that 557 children joined in either as walkers or through the Bus’nWalk option, which allows bus riders to disembark early and walk a short distance to the school grounds. The next “Walk to School” event is set for March 5. To volunteer or learn more about DavidsonWalks, please contact Ms. Levine at slevine@ci.davidson.nc.us.
