Deaths: Doyle Neal, Madge Fortner

Doyle Neal Sr. Doyle Monroe Neal Sr., a retired Davidson College physical plant employee, died Monday, Dec. 3, 2007, at North East Medical Center. He was 69.

Survivors are his wife, Betty Johnson Neal, as well as a son, Doyle M. Neal Jr., and wife Lisa, all of Davidson.

Mr. Neal had worked in the college’s physical plant carpentry department for 10 years. He also worked with his son in the landscape business. A member of Shearer Presbyterian Church, he loved fishing. He was born in Durham on April 20, 1938.

A funeral is planned Thursday at noon at Shearer Presbyterian Church, with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church before the service from 11 a.m. to noon.
Memorials may be made to Shearers Presbyterian Church Cemetery Fund, 684 Presbyterian Church Road, Mooresville, NC 28115.

Madge Fortner

Madge Malcolm Fortner, formerly of Walnut Street, Davidson, NC died Dec. 2, 2007, at the Haven in Highland Creek where she had lived since September 2003. She was 91.

Born March 3, 1916 in Lincoln County, she was a daughter of the late Lon B. Malcolm and Lucille Howard Malcolm.
She was a member of Davidson United Methodist Church since 1933 where she served faithfully in numerous capacities including President of the United Methodist women, member of Board of Trustees and Administrative Board.

She received a United Methodist Woman Life Membership/Mission Recognition Pin. She and her late husband were very active in youth activities including Counselors of MYF and Counselors of the original teenage canteen in Davidson. She also served as a Democratic judge for the Davidson precinct for 35 years.

The funeral will be today (Wed., Dec. 5) 2 p.m. at Davidson United Methodist Church with Dr. Jody Seymour and Dr. James Howell officiating. Burial will follow in the Mimosa Cemetery off Walnut Street.

The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:00 to 2:00 P.M. at the Church.

Survivors are her daughters, Jean F. Ward and husband Bill of Greensboro, Martha F. McInnis of Davidson, daughter-in-law Joey Davis Fortner of Charlotte, grandchildren, Stan Ward, Beth Ward Fonorow, Ted W Fortner, Jr., Jim Fortner, Sarah Fortner, Lynn F. Farris, Jennifer Bullock, great grandchildren, Ted Fortner III, Katherine Fortner, Laura Fortner, Daisy Fortner, Abigail Farris, and Tyler Bullock.

Also surviving are her brother, Ken Malcolm of Laurinburg, sisters, Leannis M. Goodman of Albemarle and Polly Williams of Raleigh as well as numerous nieces and nephews who brought special joy to her life.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, James W. Fortner, son, Ted W. Fortner, sisters, Lottie Hager, Travis M. Shaver, brothers, Leigh, Bill and Don Malcolm.

Memorials may be made to the Davidson United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 718 Davidson, NC. 28036 or Alzheimers Association , 3800 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, N.C. 28215.
