The Town Board holds its monthly meeting Tuesday with votes or hearings on a long list of issues,
from a revised interlocal agreement governing the cable TV system purchase to the proposed 7-story Meeting Place office and retail tower off Exit 30 to a proposed amendment to the planning ordinance that would alter requirements for glass on building exteriors. Also this week, Monday’s Veteran’s Day observance downtown, several concerts including the Carolina Voices Festival Singers next Sunday (photo), and a lecture Wednesday about artist Man Ray. And don’t forget Wednesday’s big basketball game between Davidson and UNC Chapel Hill.

SUNDAY, NOV. 11, 4:30-6:30 p.m., Davidson College Duke Dormitory courtyard – Celebration of Diwali, Hindu festival of lights. Includes puja demonstration and classical Indian dance performance. Free.
MONDAY, NOV. 12 –American Legion Post 86 and Davidson Park & Recreation hold the 14th annual Davidson Veteran’s Day Observance on the village green starting at 11 a.m. Retired Air Force Gen. Thomas M. Sadler will give the keynote address.
MONDAY, NOV. 12, 7 p.m., Davidson College Presbyterian Church congregation house – Davidson Lands Conservancy Annual meeting. Tom Ross, new president of Davidson College, is the main speaker. Also on the program: a financial report, election of officers, updates on Conservancy activities, and an update on the town’s Greenprint Committee with chair Dave Martin.
TUESDAY, NOV. 13, 7 p.m., Town Hall, 216 S. Main St. – Monthly Town Board meeting. Agenda includes presentations on Lake Norman Hospice, fiscal 2006-2007 town audit, recognition of Eagle Scouts and the town’s recent citizen survey. Also, public hearings and votes on proposed historic designation for Ada Jenkins Center, amendments to the One Harbor Place master plan, a development plan for Davidson East. A hearing also will be held on a planning ordinance amendment changing the percentage of glass required in buildings. The board also will vote on creating a tax increment financing district to help raise money for the North Commuter Rail Line, on seeking financing for a land purchase, and on a revised interlocal agreement governing the proposed purchase of the former Adelphia Cable System. The board also is expected to approve a resolution allowing public hearings and votes at the Nov. 27 Town Board work session on projects including Meeting Place, Davidson Hall (the Pine Road project proposed by Lawrence Kimbrough and Killian-Simonini) and on financing for a land purchase. TUESDAY, NOV. 13, 7:30 p.m., Davidson College Tyler-Talman Hall – Baroque chamber music concert, with contralto Diane Thornton, cellist Barbara Blaker Krumdieck, and harpsichordist Henry Lebedinsky playing works by Purcell, Vivaldi and Monteverdi.
WEDNESDAY, NOV. 14, 7 p.m., Town Hall, 216 S. Main St. – Monthly Design Review Board meeting, including a recommendation to the Town Board about the proposed height for the 7-story Meeting Place office tower off Exit 30; discussions or presentations on The Pinnacle offices and condo tower, off Exit 30; and an update on ongoing projects.
WEDNESDAY, NOV. 14, 7 p.m.,
Davidson College Belk Visual Art Center, Main and Griffith streets – “Archives and Ambivalence: The Natural and Unnatural Forces Shaping Man Ray’s Legacy,” an art lecture by John P. Jacob, director of the Inge Morath Foundation in New York City and a longtime artist and curator. Free.
WEDNESDAY, NOV. 14, 7 p.m., Bobcats Arena, Charlotte – Davidson men’s basketball team takes on the University of North Carolina Tarheels. Broadcast on ESPN.
THURSDAY, NOV. 15, 9:30 a.m., Town Hall, 216 S. Main St. – meeting of DavidsonWalks, a citizen committee that encourages biking and walking.
THURSDAY, NOV. 15, 7:30 p.m., Davidson College student union – 10th annual Davidson Reads event, with crime novelist John Hart and poet Jason Koo. Free.
FRIDAY, NOV. 16, 10 a.m., Main Street Books, downtown Davidson — Story Hour for children five and under. Free.
FRIDAY, NOV. 16, 7:30 p.m., Davidson College Presbyterian Church – Andris Rozukalns of Hickory will peform an organ concert featuring Latvian composers and other works as part of the “Organ at Davidson” series. Free, donations accepted. Reception following the performance.
FRIDAY, NOV. 16, 8 p.m., Davidson College Duke Family Performance Hall – Davidson College Symphony Orchestra Concert plays works by Berlioz, Rimsky-Korsakov, and “Piano Concerto No. 2 in F Minor” by Chopin, featuring Artist Associate, Cynthia Lawing.
SATURDAY, NOV. 17, 8 p.m., Duke Family Performance Hall – The Davidson College Symphony Orchestra and the college’s Chorale will play together with the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra and Oratorio Singers of Charlotte. The concert will feature works by Brahms, Handel, Bach and Mendelssohn. General admission is $18, college faculty and staff $14, student tickets $5. SUNDAY, NOV. 18, 4-5 p.m., Town Hall – Ralph Levering, a professor of history at Davidson College, leads a presentation and panel discussion on local mill history. This event, sponsored by Davidson Historical Society, is part of the DavidsonREADS 2007 focus on the novel “The Bridge.” The program is free and open to the public. SUNDAY, NOV. 18, 3 p.m. – Carolina Voices Festival Singers in the Music at St. Alban’s concert series. The award-winning Charlotte-based Festival Singers (see photo above) form the classic music ensemble of Carolina Voices, directed by Donna Hill. This concert will feature a spiritual adventure with Maurice Duruflé’s Requiem and Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Toward the Unknown Region. St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, 310 Caldwell Lane. THROUGH DEC. 12, Davidson College Visual Arts Center, Main and Griffith streets – “Collected Light: Photography from the Permanent Collection,” including work by such noted photographers as Arbus, Atget, and Kertesz; and the “Davidson Open Photography Exhibition,” with work by college students, faculty and staff, including Herb Jackson, gallery director Brad Thomas and visiting artist Ryan O’Malley. St. Alban’s Church, 310 Caldwell Lane – The Beggar Boys. The Celtic Christmas concert by the Beggar Boys is a popular annual feature of the St. Alban’s series. The group consists of Boston musicians playing with Davidson’s own Henry Lebedinsky and Kate Minogue. In addition, the musicians will be joined by Irish step dancers from Charlotte’s Rince na h’Eireann academy of Irish Dance.
