Enjoy the annual fall student
dance performance, attend a one-man show on sexuality, cheer the Wildcats soccer and volleyball teams. This and more is on the slate for the weekend and you can read all about it below.
Weekend of Nov. 2-4
EVENTS –
The Davidson Day Lecture Series will feature David Johnson, author of Voices of Sudan, speaking Friday at 11:30 a.m. Johnson is a photographer who will share his images and stories of Sudan and talk about the hope and human spirit that genocide cannot kill. Free and open to the public. Limited reserved seating, call 704-237-5200. Davidson Day, a private elementary and secondary school, is located at 750 Jetton Street.
Two Charlotte Checkers hockey players will visit children at the Ada Jenkins Center After School Program Friday from 4:30-5:30 p.m.. Children will play indoor hockey and have a chance to question the players.
The annual fall Davidson Dance Ensemble featuring 150-plus students performing jazz, modern, lyrical, hip-hop, ballet, step and ballroom dance is set for Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m.. The event will be held at the Davidson College Duke Family Performance Hall. Admission is $4 for students/faculty/staff and $6 for the general public.
“Us,” a one-man performance by actor and playwright Tim Miller, will begin at 8 p.m. Friday in the Davidson College union’s 900 room. The performance combines Miller’s passion for Broadway musicals with an exploration of issues faced by lesbians and gays. Miller is at Davidson for a 5-day residency that will include creation of a student play to be performed Saturday at 8 p.m. Free. Details on the college website.
Davidson-Cornelius Daycare, 242 Gamble St., will hold a yard sale Saturday, 8 a.m. to noon, to benefit the center’s scholarship fund.
The Town of Davidson will host the seventh of eight volunteer trail clearing days Saturday morning starting at 8:30 a.m. Volunteers for the Fisher Farm Work Day should meet at the parking lot. Bring pruning shears, clippers, and hand saws. Experienced trail builders will guide volunteers. Wear appropriate clothing. Youth are permitted to help but parents must sign a waiver on the morning of the work session. Questions: contact Lauren Blackburn, Davidson Town Planner.
SPORTS –
Wildcats sports this weekend features men’s soccer and volleyball. The men’s soccer team, now 2-3-1 in Southern Conference play, wraps up its home schedule with a 2 p.m. contest against College of Charleston on Saturday at Alumni Stadium. In addition, the Wildcats will honor their four seniors before the game for Senior Day. The Davidson volleyball team will host conference rivals Elon and UNC Greensboro at Belk Arena this weekend. The ‘Cats face the Phoenix on Sat., Nov. 3 at 2 p.m. and the Spartans at 2 p.m. the following afternoon.
