EVENTS –

The Davidson Day Lecture Series will feature David Johnson, author of Voices of Sudan, speaking Friday at 11:30 a.m. Johnson is a photographer who will share his images and stories of Sudan and talk about the hope and human spirit that genocide cannot kill. Free and open to the public. Limited reserved seating, call 704-237-5200. Davidson Day, a private elementary and secondary school, is located at 750 Jetton Street.

Two Charlotte Checkers hockey players will visit children at the Ada Jenkins Center After School Program Friday from 4:30-5:30 p.m.. Children will play indoor hockey and have a chance to question the players.

The annual fall Davidson Dance Ensemble featuring 150-plus students performing jazz, modern, lyrical, hip-hop, ballet, step and ballroom dance is set for Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m.. The event will be held at the Davidson College Duke Family Performance Hall. Admission is $4 for students/faculty/staff and $6 for the general public.

“Us,” a one-man performance by actor and playwright Tim Miller, will begin at 8 p.m. Friday in the Davidson College union’s 900 room. The performance combines Miller’s passion for Broadway musicals with an exploration of issues faced by lesbians and gays. Miller is at Davidson for a 5-day residency that will include creation of a student play to be performed Saturday at 8 p.m. Free. Details on the college website.

Davidson-Cornelius Daycare, 242 Gamble St., will hold a yard sale Saturday, 8 a.m. to noon, to benefit the center’s scholarship fund.

The Town of Davidson will host the seventh of eight volunteer trail clearing days Saturday morning starting at 8:30 a.m. Volunteers for the Fisher Farm Work Day should meet at the parking lot. Bring pruning shears, clippers, and hand saws. Experienced trail builders will guide volunteers. Wear appropriate clothing. Youth are permitted to help but parents must sign a waiver on the morning of the work session. Questions: contact Lauren Blackburn, Davidson Town Planner.

SPORTS –

Wildcats sports this weekend features men’s soccer and volleyball. The men’s soccer team, now 2-3-1 in Southern Conference play, wraps up its home schedule with a 2 p.m. contest against College of Charleston on Saturday at Alumni Stadium. In addition, the Wildcats will honor their four seniors before the game for Senior Day. The Davidson volleyball team will host conference rivals Elon and UNC Greensboro at Belk Arena this weekend. The ‘Cats face the Phoenix on Sat., Nov. 3 at 2 p.m. and the Spartans at 2 p.m. the following afternoon.

• MONDAY, NOV. 5, 7:30 p.m., Tyler-Tallman Hall of the Sloan Music Center – Ensemble East, a troupe performing traditional Japanese chamber music, will appear as part of the Davidson College concert series. Tickets are $20 for general admission, $15 for seniors, free for students.

• THURSDAY, NOV. 8 – The off-Broadway play “Driving Miss Daisy” by Alfred Uhry opens for an eight show run through Nov. 18. Contact Davidson Community Players for more information, but be aware that all 900 seats have already been sold out.
• FRIDAY, NOV. 9 – Contra Dance Carolina will be twisting and twirling at the Davidson IB Middle School, 7:15 – 10:30 p.m. Friday. Laurie Fisher of “The String Beings” and Cailen Campbell of “The Rocket Boys” will play and Diane Silver will be the caller. Balcony seating is available for nondancers and lessons will be offered at 7 p.m. Cost is $7 for general admission and $5 for students.
• MONDAY, NOV. 12 –American Legion Post 86 and Davidson Park & Recreation hold the 14th annual Davidson Veteran’s Day Observance on the village green starting at 11 a.m.
• FRIDAY, NOV. 16, 7:30 p.m., Davidson College Presbyterian Church – Andris Rozukalns will peform an organ concert featuring Latvian composers and other works as part of the “Organ at Davidson” series.
• SUNDAY, NOV. 18, 4-5 p.m., Town Hall – Presentation by the Davidson Historical Society on local mill history. This event is part of the DavidsonReads 2007 focus on the novel “The Bridge.”
• THURS. – SAT., NOV 29 – DEC. 1 – The town of Davidson will be hosting its 19th annual Christmas in Davidson celebration. Planned events include Santa and Mrs. Claus, strolling carolers, horse-drawn carriages, hot cider, live music, street magicians and more. The celebration concludes with a parade through town Dec. 1.
