At last some rain! As you enjoy the rare drizzle this Friday morning,
we have plenty of options to consider as you plan your weekend. There’s a book release Friday at Summit Coffee, a football game at the college Saturday and a blood drive at St. Alban’s Sunday. EVENTS –
Mainstreet Books will host storytime for kids Friday at 10 a.m. The store is located at 126 South Main. Call 704-892-6841 for more information.
Pianist Robert Hallquist will perform a Musical interludes concert Friday, starting at 12:30 p.m. at the college’s Tyler-Tallman Hall. The free concert will include works by Felix and Fanny Mendelssohn, Clara and Robert Schumann.
Summit Coffee on . The book focuses on the Pottsville, Pa., Maroons, one of the most dominant, influential – and controversial – teams in NFL history. It’s the second book by Mr. Fleming, a senior writer at ESPN The Magazine. The Summit event is one of several in the area this week. Live music at Summit Coffee this weekend includes The Near Misses Friday and The Pocket Saturday. Performances are 8-11 p.m.
St. Alban’s Episcopal Church will hold its annual fall blood drive Saturday, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The church will host the drive together with Community Blood Center of the Carolinas. Enter through the rear of the church, downstairs. Walk-ins welcome. Call or email Jeff Ready, 704-896-2625 to schedule an appointment.
The Town of Davidson will host the fourth of eight scheduled volunteer trail clearing days Saturday morning starting at 8:30 a.m. Volunteers for the Fisher Farm Work Day should meet at the parking lot. Bring pruning shears, clippers, and hand saws. Experienced trail builders will guide volunteers. Wear appropriate clothing. Youth are permitted to help but parents must sign a waiver on the morning of the work session. Questions: contact Lauren Blackburn, Davidson Town Planner.
Davidson Day School (750 Jetton St.) will hold an open house for prospective students Sunday at 2 p.m. The event will be for preschool through high school grades for the 2008-09 school year. SPORTS –
Wildcats sports this weekend features football, men’s soccer and volleyball. The Wildcats football team will face Drake Bulldogs Saturday, starting at 7 p.m. at Richardson Stadium. This is “Take a Kid to the Game” day and those 12 and under will be admitted free. Pregame activities will include fdce painting, games and an appearance by Mr. Cat. Also Saturday, the men’s soccer team (2-10-1) will play Coastal Carolina at 4 p.m. at Alumni Stadium. The volleyball team has two conference games this weekend: the Wildcats play Western Carolina Saturday at 4 p.m. and UT-Chattanooga at 2 p.m. Sunday.

- OCT. 22-26 – Davidson College will mark North Carolina’s archives week with tours of the college archives, which includes all sorts of interesting memorabilia. Archivist Jan Blodgett and Archives Fellow Tammy Ivins will lead groups through the stacks every half hour from 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. No reservations are necessary.
- OCT. 24-28 – Davidson College production of the English Renaissance tragedy, “Women Beware Women” will be performed at the Duke Family Performance Hall.
- FRIDAY, OCT. 26, 7 p.m., family concert at Davidson College Presbyterian Church featuring the college’s symphony orchestra and chorale.
- TUESDAY, OCT. 30, 7:30 p.m., Duke Family Performance Hall – Human rights activist Sister Helen Prejean, whose book was made into the movie “Dead Man Walking,” will lecture on the death penalty.
- WEDNESDAY, OCT. 31, 3 p.m., Village Green – Pumpkin display on the Green, organized by DavidsonREADS. Bring your carved pumpkin to the green starting at 3 p.m. The lit jack-o-lanterns will be on view in the evening, to correspond to a scene from the book “The Bridge” which the community is encouraged to read.
- WEDNESDAY, OCT. 31, 5:15 p.m., Town Hall – Annual Halloween March, where costumed kids are invited to march on Main Street, collecting treats from local merchants.
- WEDNESDAY, OCT. 31, 7:30 and 11 p.m., Davidson College Presbyterian Church – Classic horror films will be accompanied by chillingly live improvised music from the fingers of Henry Lebidinsky, keyboard artist at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church. “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,” the 1921 short film take on good versus evil, will be the featured film this year.
- MONDAY, NOV. 5, 7 p.m., Davidson Public Library – public discussion of the novel “The Bridge” by Doug Marlette, as part of DavidsonReads, led by Davidson professor emeritus Tony Abbott.
- TUESDAY, NOV. 6 – Polls open for Election Day. Voter information, including rules for early or absentee voting, available on the Mecklenburg Board of Elections Website.
- WEDNESDAY, NOV. 7, 10 a.m., Davidson Public Library – a daytime public discussion session of Doug Marlette’s novel “The Bridge,” part of DavidsonREADS.
- THURSDAY, NOV. 8 – The off-Broadway play “Driving Miss Daisy” opens for an eight show run through Nov. 18. Contact Davidson Community Players for more information.
- MONDAY, NOV. 12 – The American Legion Post 86 and Davidson Parks and Recreation will hold the 14th annual Davidson Veteran’s Day Observance on the village green starting at 11 a.m.
