A retropspective exhibit of Davidson artist Herb Jackson’s “Veronica’s Veils” series has opened at McColl Center for Visual Art in Charlotte. An opening reception is planned Friday, Sept. 28, 6-9 p.m. Meanwhile, Christa Faut Gallery in Cornelius is also featuring an aspect of the series – “Veronica’s Veil Drawings” – with a reception Sunday, Oct. 7, from 4-6 p.m.
Mr. Jackson, an art professor at Davidson College, began painting the Veronica’s Veils series in 1980, according to the McColl Center. The series now numbers 175 abstract paintings, measuring 5 feet by 4 feet, each with up to 100 layers of acrylic paint mixed with pumice.
He creates the works slowly over time, not only by adding paint with brushes, but also by gouging, digging, scraping and removing paint with a variety of tools including knives, nails, and fingernails.
The McColl Center show runs through Nov. 3. On Friday, Mr. Jackson will give a gallery talk at 6:30 p.m. The gallery is at 721 N. Tryon St., Charlotte, and is open Tuesdays to Saturdays, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
CHRISTA FAUT GALLERY
Chrisa Faut Gallery, 19818 N. Cove Road in Jetton Village shopping center in Cornelius, will have a collection of Mr. Jackson’s drawings in the Veronica’s Veil series, through Nov. 12.
The gallery is open Tuesday to Fridays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 10 to 3, or by appointment. Details at the gallery website.
